My normal office is about 15 miles away. I couldn't get in and was told to go to my nearest office which is 2.5 miles away. I tried, but I decided that it was too risky to even drive 2.5 miles as the main roads were bad, but my road was awful and the little roads leading to the office were going to be bad as well.

So I had the day off as I didn't want to risk getting stuck or damaging my car just in order to sit in the local office drinking tea all day. It just isn't worth the risk. I would only be a spare part doing f**k all in my local anyway.

I'm willing to take it off my anual leave, but I don't want to work my day off next week and will not be put under pressure to work past my time to make it up.

Does this mean they can't bank hours if we are sent home early and make us repay those hours next week effectively as unpaid OT? That's what they are doing in our office. No one is happy about it but all have accepted it as we were told we HAVE to go home and we HAVE to bank the hours.

There is NO agreement to say you can be told to use a lieu/holiday day or bank hours when you cant make it in due to severe weather beyond your control. The only literature that says this is UNAGREED RM management bullying tool which as it's unagreed can be safely ignored.

What if your ADR is advising members to agree to use annual leave?

My advice is that first where possible if a member can't make their parent office they should attempt to make the office nearest their home, if that's not an option then look at swapping their day off or look at taking annual leave.
The reason for the 3rd option is that there is no clear guidance from HQ, which will have to be addressed nationally, if an agreement comes out of any discussions then people who have for example used a/leave then I would like to think they will be given those day/s back. My concern is that if the business deduct's pay from a member they will have to go through the grievance procedure which could take up to 28 days to be heard. That means the member is disadvantaged financially. The stopping of pay is the last resort of any action taken by the business. Hope this clarify's some of the issue's.

Can only assume in the nordic countries they dont get deliveries for 6 months of the year then, no wonder this country is in such a bloody mess, 2 days of snow and it grinds to a halt.

Austria Post has advised that due to heavy snow fall which began on Wednesday afternoon, mail collection, transport and delivery in some parts of the country (especially in the east and south of Austria) is delayed or not possible.

Vienna International Airport is operating but the snow fall caused some delay to inbound and outbound flights yesterday afteroon which may affect mail despatches from/to Slovakia.

Denmark

Post Danmark has advised that due to heavy snowfall and heavy winds, mail collection and delivery services are limited in many parts of the country.

Hungary

Due to bad weather at the Airmail Centre in Frankfurt, there is currently a backlog and no despatches are possible. This situation looks to continue until at least midnight on Sunday. As a result, Magyar Posta cannot forward any kind of despatches to Frankfurt.

Ireland

An Post has advised that due to heavy snow falls over the country on the 1st December, mail deliveries and collections were severely impacted and the situation is the same today, Thursday 2nd December. Inbound and outbound flights were cancelled on both the 1st and 2nd December.

Weather reports for the area suggest the severe weather conditions will continue, resulting in transport disruption, and impacting on both inbound and outbound mail services.

Luxembourg

P & T Luxembourg has advised that due to heavy snowfalls and icy roads since Wednesday afternoon, all international outbound transports had to be cancelled.

None of the international inbound transports had arrived and LUX airport was closed at 6.00pm yesterday evening.

Domestic Mail collection could not be entirely performed and mail delivery will be partly disturbed as well.

Poland

Due to very heavy snowfalls Poczta Polska have confirmed there are problems with the transport of mail throughout the country (both air transport and surface transport are affected). As a result of this there will be delays in the acceptance, distribution and deliveries of postal items.

Since 29 November, the following delays and cancellations have occurred at Warsaw airport:

29.11.2010 - 44 flights were delayed, and 18 flights were cancelled.
30.11.2010 - 55 flights were delayed, and 8 flights were cancelled.
01.12.2010 - 58 flights were delayed, and 11 flights were cancelled.
02.12.2010 - 65 flights were delayed, and 12 flights were cancelled.

Republic of Ireland

Severe weather conditions nationwide in Ireland are impacting many essential services including those provided by An Post. The continued adverse weather has seriously impacted mail delivery services for the past week. Below are areas where services are currently most affected:

Enniscorthy, Wexford and Kilkenny – deliveries in these areas have not been possible.

While An Post staff are making every effort to deliver mail wherever possible across the country today, the collection and delivery of mail will be restricted in all areas, most particularly Dublin 5, 12, 17 and Glenageary.

There are also restricted deliveries in parts of the North West, the Midlands and Western Counties.


So even countries like Poland, Austria, Denmark all suffered during the bad weather over the last few weeks.
