Royal Mail: Small firms hit hard by post delays

Small businesses have warned that postal delays could hit them hard as invoice payments fail to get through in the snow.

The Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland said delivery problems meant hundreds of small companies across Scotland had not received mail for some days - meaning many had missed out on crucial payments from customers.

The Royal Mail admitted it did not know when normal service would resume and depended on the weather conditions.

"In the current economic climate, cashflow can be very tight for some companies," said FSB Scotland spokesman Colin Borland.

"With the current weather situation, especially if people are waiting for post coming up from down south, it is quite a problem. If you are a business which still gets the majority of its payments by cheque, this is just another thing cracking around the edges at a difficult time."

Postal workers have been struggling to make deliveries to homes and businesses, especially in rural areas, while problems with air and road travel across the UK have made it difficult to transport mail.

Small businesses have been particularly hard-hit during the recession, with many relying on swift payments from creditors.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: "All of our postmen and women in Scotland are facing disruption. We are working hard to keep the mail moving and are making deliveries and collections where it is safe and possible to do so.

"If anyone is concerned about the delivery of an important item then they should contact their local delivery office.

Those same firms who do NOT send things on time and say to the customer "that'll be those lazy bastard postman" when the item hasn't been sent.

I've been told many a time that it must be delayed in the post when clearly it hasn't, they are of course unaware that I work for Royal Mail and how their attitude changes when I tell them that.
