A SON was left stunned when he received a postcard sent to his late parents - 29 YEARS AGO.

Billy Murdoch was holidaying at his mum and dad's old home when a note dropped through the letterbox to say there was a £1.18 fee to collect an underpaid item at the post office.

But when inquisitive Billy went to pick it up he was gobsmacked to find it was a postcard sent to his mum and dad Willie and Edith from their neighbours in 1981.

Red-faced mail bosses immediately gave him back his cash when Billy pointed out the 14p postage stamp on the holiday greetings card was the correct amount to pay for when it had been sent.

Ironically Willie worked in the same post office in Nairn, Inverness-shire, while Billy's grandfather also worked for Royal Mail. Billy, of Bromley, Kent, joked: "My father worked for the post office for 45 years and my grandfather was in the post office for 45 years.

"I am sure they never saw a postcard delivered so late."

Billy said the postcard had been sent from Wales by neighbours Sandy and Jean Tulloch - who have since died.

It was sheer luck Billy and his wife Mair, 59, were holidaying at his parent's former home, because Royal Mail only hold on to underpaid material for a maximum of three weeks.

Neighbour Sandy's family went on to found the massive Tulloch construction empire. SPL side Inverness Caley Thistle's Tulloch Caledonian Stadium is named after the family.

Don't know how 29 years happened, but recently had a letter 3 years old, was in a "empty" bag from the mail centre, guessing hadn't been checked properly and sat in the pile of mail bags for a long while till it found its way to our DO so then got forwarded on with the missorts,

stuck in bags,machines etc
caught in the joins of frames or the likes
so if an offices has new equipment,moves etc it might get found
