Royal Mail gives new pledge on Dundee East delivery office

Royal Mail insists the giant backlog of mail that has piled up at its Dundee East delivery office will finally be cleared by the end of the week.

The company has come in for heavy criticism from a number of residents in the DD4 and DD5 postcode areas who are angry and frustrated at the erratic service.

One such customer is Sandy Bain from Monifieth, who is calling for an inquiry.

Mr Bain described the depot's new system as "haywire" and said it could lead to people missing out on vital post.

"We hadn't been getting any deliveries for the last three or four days so we phoned them up at 12.30pm asking what was going on," he said. "The woman I spoke to said, as far as she was concerned, all the mail had been delivered. Then when I pressed her she went and checked and said they were having some trouble.

"I went out to Carnoustie to drop my wife off later in the afternoon and when I came back there was some mail. I'm still waiting for a letter from the pensions office.

"The mail has been haywire. We used to get deliveries every day without fail and now we are only getting two or three deliveries a week.

"The whole thing is ridiculous, especially if you are waiting for something. We ordered tickets to a classical concert in Manchester and they arrived but they were late.

'Something wrong'

"We had the hotel, transport, everything booked and if they hadn't arrived it would have been a disaster. The point is something is going wrong with the new system."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail told The Courier a review has been carried out and all the mail that has built up in the delivery office will be in the right home within a matter of days.

The firm previously predicted it would be rid of the pile of mail by the end of the second week of November.

She said, "A full investigation has taken place in Dundee East delivery office and we are currently working through the issues identified. We expect the backlog of mail to be cleared by the end of this week.

"Any customer who is concerned about a particular item of mail should call customer services on 08457 740740."

Nothing said about the 8 hours scheduled attendance to posties for 2 hours worked and 6 hours travelling time plus travelling allowance I wonder why

10 planners in today, testing loops, 3 vans turned away this morning with mail for us, at least 20 agency staff there again, 10 on nightshift inc managers from glasgow, glasgow quality o service guys delivering packets, failed walks from previous day goes out at 7 am, with regular 2 posties going out with the rest o the mail at 10 am.

Folk reckon in the past month there has been over 100,000 quid on o/t, and its rising, as said before, its all scheduled att, and we have a choice of what hours we want to work at xmas, 4 x 12 hours, , 6 nights on ot plus our own dely, 5 days and day off on sched, early start, do dely and pkts onn o/t, its endless.
We are starting xmas duties this monday ffs!!!!!

We got our 600 quid yesterday, lobbed into our banks, and sheffield know nothing about it, guaranteed, christ knows who authorised it, but we got taxed by 210 quid, why , we dont know, but we got no wage slip telling us, it just got deposited in our bank accounts, chaos!!!!1

The edinburgh dom cant believe how busy the affluent dd5 sector is, and mail fails massively on a daily basis, he sees no solution to the probs.
We have not done any IPS- SORTING, since this went in a month ago, and xmas duties start on monday,

They have just about caught up wi the mail, nearly, but sky mags are due, and with no-one able to sort cause we dont know the new overheads, its all gonna go tits up in the next week again, and the bathgate temps will be needed back home, as will the glasgow and edinburgh night overtime guys and gaffers.

Bring it on, a lot o the guys are doing mega o/t the now, and are preparing to tell them to "poke it " nearer xmas, maybe we will get double time for all docket the nearer xmas comes?

oh, forgot to add that manager s will no longer handle any customer complaints re late, missing, delayed mail, the phg is to give them a card to call the 0845 complaints hotline!!!!
Just another cop out, and one day last week, they switched off all the telephones, thus pissing off all those complainants.

On holiday this week, but last week was as bad as ever, still a backlog ,managers trying to deny there is a backlog despite other offices still sorting our mail and staff turning up from all over the country for overtime, god only knows how bad it is this week, weather is horrendous doubt if any deliveries going out.

News been quiet lately.

There is now a mountain of mail lying from the start of the week/revision with little chance of it being moved; as the snow has made the task of shifting it almost impossible.
There seems to be very little communication between all the managers as they all tell different stories/directives,too many cooks?
Today posties were told to load their vans and go out at 7.30/8am!
The bullying has started as the managers are obviously feeling the heat and they are picking on junior posties first.
The country is grinding to a halt, yet they tell us 'to do your job' and go out in the worst conditions I have seen in over 20 years.

Sorry, but Christmas cards could still be delivered in the summer at Dundee East as the result of a bad revision, poor planning/timing, inadequate management and I almost forgot a lot of snow
