The Communication Worker's Union says it delighted by the news Royal Mail's decided to drop plans to move it's delivery office from Welwyn Garden City...

The company was proposing to shift operations to Stevenage.

But, a long-running campaign involving local MP Grant Shapps and a petition of 7,000 names has paid off.

CWU representative for Welwyn Garden City, Lee Barnes, revealed the news to Jack FM.

Royal Mail's also announced Hitchin delivery office will move to the existing Stevenage mail centre.

The company says it's investing in the site with new machinery.

It's anticipated that around 300 fewer jobs will be required, out of the 4,500 people Royal Mail currently employs in the area.

Royal Mail's Thames Valley Regional Operations Director, Rob Jenson said: "This decision represents a significant investment to modernise Royal Mail operations through new technology and working conditions for our people.

The new mail centre will be equipped with state-of-the-art automation which can sort mail more efficiently and much faster, which will enable us to give better service and value to our customers.

It will also provide our people with a more modern working environment.

Our service to customers will continue to be a top priority during these changes and it is our intention to maintain the high level of service to our customers that they expect and deserve.

We also intend to continue to provide convenient local facilities for customers wishing to collect mail.

The decision will also mean changes for our people, and it is anticipated that around 300 fewer jobs will be required, out of the 4,500 people we currently employ in the area.

We have consulted our unions before reaching this decision and we have a great track record for managing such changes.

We continue to work together to help our employees through this change and we are confident that everyone who wants to remain in Royal Mail will be able to do so."
