Workers' award after posting improved performance:Cardiff MC

POSTAL workers at Cardiff Mail Centre have helped win a major international award – by swapping a trolley for a tow truck.

The simple improvement is one of many changes that have been made at Royal Mail’s South Wales depot that has helped save £1.5m in mail centres across the UK.

The bronze award from the World Class Manufacturing Association encourages organisations across the world to strive for operational excellence and world-class performance.

Cardiff workers helped achieve the award by following a Japanese model that has improved Royal Mail’s programme to improve safety, quality of service and efficiency in mail centres across the UK.

The introduction of the tow truck at the mail centre in Cardiff to move the mail around the shop floor, instead of several workers pushing wheeled trollies around, has literally saved miles of walking time.

“We worked out that we were walking an average of four miles from clocking on the shift to clocking off,” said machine operator Jacleen Wheeler.

Paul Parvin, director of process for Royal Mail in Wales, said “World Class Mail gives everyone an opportunity to be actively involved in our transformation on the operational floor – not in the office.

“Those who are introducing the World Class mail techniques have found it exciting and have relished the chance to improve safety, quality and their working environment, while also providing an improved service to our customers.”

:Very Happy God-they give out awards for anything these days! But how has this tow truck saved 1.5 million? Did they find they no longer needed so many postmen so paid them off?

Is it RM ritual suicide. The hara-kiri is "World Class Mail" and you helping get rid of jobs, whilst "Seppuku" is RM P45ing you.
