Grant Shapps welcomes Welwyn Garden City sorting office decision

WELWYN Hatfield MP Grant Shapps has welcomed the decision by Royal Mail not to close the WGC sorting office.

The housing minister actively opposed plans to shut the Bessemer Road facility and move the operations to Stevenage, and last Wednesday delivered a petition signed by almost 7,000 WGC residents to Royal Mail representatives at his offices in Westminster.

Today (Friday), following the announcement that Royal Mail had reconsidered the proposals, Mr Shapps said he “had a feeling” the campaign opposing the closure would be successful.

“This is the news we’ve all been waiting to hear,” Mr Shapps said. “It never made sense to close the sorting office in WGC and move it to Stevenage.

“This would have had a terrible impact on the mail service for nearby businesses and been a problem for residents who use the drop off point.

“I had a feeling things were going our way when the postmen came to visit me at Parliament and I asked the Royal Mail to come and accept the petition containing 6,500 names of locally concerned residents and businesses.”
