Royal Mail managers are now “not likely” to strike over Christmas in a dispute over compulsory redundancies, according to the Unite union’s lead officer representing mail managers.

National secretary Paul Reuter met Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene for talks last week over plans to make 1,500 managers redundant.

The company has so far refused to make guarantees that no-one will be forced out of a job, which led Unite to announce a strike ballot last month.

But Mr Reuter told Tribune this week: “We anticipate that they may be able to get away with this without compulsory redundancy. They’re not pulling the trigger on compulsory redundancy at the moment. If they do, we’ll respond.”

Both enforced redundancies and a strike ballot were therefore “not likely this year”, Mr Reuter said.
Royal Mail business, and the potential for disruption by industrial action, vastly increases in the run-up to Christmas.
