Royal Mail’s chief executive Moya Greene claimed that criticism of the operator’s modernisation programme was unfair.

In defence of the company, Greene added: “Royal Mail has surpassed any other modernisation programme I have seen. It is a challenge for me to listen as I hear the kind of criticism we have received.”

She went on to say that Royal Mail already has some of the best mail sorting facilities in the world.

She says it's a challenge to hear criticism, God help us all if it's too much for poor Moya and if she thinks MCs are top notch what a load of old tosh...

For the record Dave took the opportunity to speak at this event as it was an opportunity to get the union"s message over to audience which included MPs ,Forigen postal adminstrations including TNT and other politcal and key figures in the mail"s market.

The theme of Dave"s speach was one which he has done on countless occasions and will be based on this :

That due to the combination of Post Comm , and the last Labour Government they have introduced unfair competition into the mail"s market. This has led to companies coming in and taking the profitable part of the mail "s industry and leaving Royal Mail with the part of the operation which makes no money the final delivery. That the union has been campaigning for the last 6 years against DSA and against Post Comm since 2001. The last Labour Government initated the Hooper review as a result of the CWU getting it put in as a result of the Warwick agreement. However Hooper took a bung and is still taking a bung under the Con Dems.

On the issue of DSA both Royal Mail and the CWU share the same objective in getting changes on the access price and the whole issue of DSA. Of course TNT and others are lobbying against this but I think this is one area where we will be succussful.

Surely your not suggesting the union take credit for changes in the access price.
The changes in regulatory control from a heavy touch to a light touch are for one reason only dingo....because that's how the private sector like it.....just ask the banks.
They are sweetening the pot to sell us off......that's all.

Another part of Dave"s speach was on pensions. The union has been arguing for a number of years that the pensions defecit should be taken on by the Govenment as they caused it by taking the pensions holiday for 13 years. The Government are willing to take on the pensions defecit which obviously will free up money for Royal Mail . However this Government wants to take on the assets of the scheme which is 26 billion and is owned by all of us in the pension scheme which is unacceptable.

In addition within the postal services bill , it does not allow for any new owner to have a pension"s defecit which means that no new owner can have a pension scheme which is contributory scheme which means the closure of our pension shceme going forward.

Dave then went onto say that these were the big ticket issues which needed to be adressed and privatisation was not the answer. All Privatisation will do is end the USO. The postal services bill allows Off com to review the USO within 2 years. Can you imagine any new owner want to continue to deliver the Highlands of Scotland which costs in the region of £18 from London for a letter.

In additon the seperation of Post Office Counters will mean that any new owner will drive a hard bargin with Post Office counters which will lead to less post offices open especially as the subsidy is phased out.

In addition is it right that this country sells Royal Mail to either German or Dutch Post offices ? Especially as in his former career that Ed Davey the minster in charge of the sell off actually worked for a number of oversea postal companies. Vested interests or what.

Dave then went onto states that despite the fact that no one believed it possbile the CWU and Royal Mail achieved an agreement on automation and transformation. The members had accepted the agreement. That Royal Mail is undergoing the biggest transformation change of any UK company. Our members are seeing massive changes whether thats as a result of mail centre closures , Walk sequencing , Car derived Vans or the amalgamation of delivery units.

Whatever anyones views on the 2010 BT agreement , it has safeguards in the way of having to reach agreement, pay money for the introduction of revisons , levels of full time workers , MTSF , the overarching objective of avoiding complusory redundancies etc.

Would any new owner be committed to these safeguards going forward ? Especially in the light of what TNT are doing to its workers in Holland.

Dave also stated that the agreement put people first and thats what the bussiness must be committed too.

Dave was right...no-one did believe that the CWU and Royal Mail would reach agreement...but then no-one was really aware of the politics going on in the background...were they?

Well I am glad someone is taking responsibility for the "transformation" - we have been successfully transformed from a profit making public service into a non-profit making business.

I have no time for these sound bites from someone who negotiated the worst deal that the CWU membership has ever seen and sat still whilst the present pension was decimated without so much as a whimper, whilst I might add still enjoying a final salary pension himself funded by the membership. Of course I am sure he feels totally justified in taking it.

Would any new owner be negotiating with the CWU or would it be more of the hand in hand negotiating there is now - if so, exactly what would the CWU negotiate away just to remain sat at the table?

Dingo, please tell me where this agreement is putting people first and in what regions. Can you also please tell me how many people that have gone through revisions have actually received any compensation payments. Its all retorich and you know as well as every person working for Royal Mail that the company is in crisis and before long the plug will be pulled on this shameful agreement.
