RESIDENTS have been left bemused after thieves uprooted and stole a Royal Mail post box from a Dudley street, leaving a large hole where it once stood.
The familiar red metal pillar box was taken from The Parade, at its junction with Dudley College’s Castle View campus some time between 1pm on November 13 and 11am on November 15.
Police are currently investigating the theft but are unsure how it was stolen, as it has been removed from its footing, leaving a hole in the pavement where it had been.
Val Wright, who lives in The Parade, said: “I actually walked up to it to post a letter and didn’t actually notice it had gone until I got right up to it and saw the huge hole.
“I couldn’t believe it, it was such a shock. They have been digging up the road recently, so I thought maybe they had moved it because of that, but I can’t believe it has been stolen, it was used very regularly by people.”
A West Midlands Police spokesman, said: “It is unclear what the motive may be for this theft, however dealers are reminded that such an item is the property of Royal Mail and anyone found to handle or have the post box in their possession may well be prosecuted for handling stolen goods.”
A spokesman for Royal Mail, said: “Thefts of post boxes are relatively rare, but this style of pillar box is very large and heavy and would be very hard to conceal. If anyone does have any information we urge them to contact the police.”
Royal Mail are now looking into the possibility of replacing the box in the near future.
