Politicians continue call to save Usk delivery office

TWO politicians are continuing to call for a Monmouthshire delivery office to be kept open.

Monmouth MP David Davies and his assembly constituency colleague Nick Ramsay said they failed to agree with Royal Mail officials at a meeting last week on how much would be saved by the closure of Usk Delivery Office, which is due to be moved to Pontypool in January.

The two argued that the benefits of keeping the office open outweighed the savings that might be made.

“We presented a set of figures to Royal Mail and they presented a different set of figures to us,” the two politicians said in a joint statement.

Its unclear how much may be saved by the closure - Royal Mail say the information is commercially sensitive while Mr Davies and Mr Ramsay have not released their own figures.

Both politicians said the company gave assurances that included that there will be no job losses, no change to the post codes on residents, no closure of Usk Post Office and that the newspaper delivery service will continue.

Officers also promised that there would be no change to the overall service. Mr Davies and Mr Ramsay asked them if residents would continue to get their mail at the same time.

They said officers replied that most would. “There is an old adage ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ and we are worried that this is exactly what Royal Mail are doing,” the two claimed.

Mr Davies added he has made it clear to Royal Mail that he’d be happy to hold a joint meeting between them and local representatives to bring a “satisfactory conclusion” to the issue.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said at the meeting Royal Mail managers sought to reassure Mr Davies and Mr Ramsay that the merger of Usk Delivery Office into Pontypool Delivery Office will not impact adversely on customers and staff.
