Heard a distant rumour about somebody who was burying mail, I'm absolutely convinced that this must be urban legend that is recounted to every new-starter in every office throughout the country. If not, I'm absolutely amazed, it sounds completely absurd. Not heard of any thieves around abouts though, we must have good thieves in our office .

I've never understood how someone can just go home and "store" the mail. If you weren't going to deliver it, you'd at least get rid properly wouldn't ya?!
Not like the guy around here who was dumping it in the forest and it was found by the park warden people and the mail was then delivered, half mouldy and everything... There were practically lynch mobs in some areas on rounds because they thought every postie was then doing the same.
I had to deliver some of the mail that this guy had feeved/delayed: http://www.wigantoday.net/news/6_000_it ... n_1_173289" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; One customer came out and told me that his business went bust because of cheques he never received.

had a young lad who missed a place at oxford university because of a thieving bastard at our office
I ve seen most things in stealing mail over the years from simple "could not be arsed" so took it home and stacked it in the shed to mail being burned in a field. And they have all been caught !
The best one was a guy who was on a delivery for years and very slow but always got round about the same time each day . Every re-pick (yearly back then) he choose this crappy heavy round with loads of flats. Anyway one cold winter a pipe burst in the loft of one of the blocks and a section of ceiling fell into someone' s flat along with half a ton of soggy mail. When they checked the other blocks they found mail in all the lofts. How he had got away with it all these years god only knows.
He was of course fired but escaped court due to suffering from depression. He went of to work for a retail carpet warehouse.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........
Guy from our office was recently caught for thieving - birthday cards and allsorts. We were all suprised as he was a 'mate' (at least we thought he was, the twat had been stealing from all our walks!).
Anyway he was forced to resign and then got 9 months, so his xmas dinner will be the prison don's clegnuts
IMO it should carry an automatic 2 year sentence to put people off, it gives us all a bad name and there's no doubt that we were all watched whilst the investigation was ongoing.

Another case were the postperson is caught purely by chance... Its right he got sacked and prosecuted (no mention of the sentance) but any normal member of the public reading that is surely going to be asking questions about why things weren't picked up earlier. Surely people complained of missing mail/packets its not rocket science to put 2 and 2 together and start wondering why there was a cluster of missing mail/packets linked to 1 walk.
I note that a very large number of postpersons appear NOT to be nicking for personal gain but because they feel they couldn't cope.... is that a legalistic argument put forward to mitigate the crime or are there people out there that feel so under pressure and unable to go to anyone that they nick/delay/store what ever you want to call it mail? If its the latter what are RM doing to solve this problem?
The guy on the walk next to mine was sacked after the police went to his address for a drugs bust and found a house full of bedsits... not knowing which was the correct one they did them all. In this postman's room they found a load of opened packets and mail. He'd been doing it for years but only selecting stuff that he was sure contained things of value. Never found out if he got prosecuted.... last I heard he was working for a well known American fried chicken chain.

Spot on! and not only watched SUSPECTED as well!
Just about the worst thing about this job is when a customer hasn't received an item they were expecting and it always seems to be because of " all you feev'in postmen".... sorry, but I do take it personally! I think that if RM came down like a ton of bricks on the people caught AND publicised it then it would make people think twice, three, four times before they were tempted.
