cars on delivery

No cars on delivery again for "SOME"of us in our office. Manager had to drop us out , didn't have clue where he was going. Got their backs up a bit they have now started saying that when it is light we have to come back to the office to pick up another walk .What do you think about that then?

Spedley, what the heck do you mean about not ever getting your point across ?

First, you try to say that using your car doesn't save Royal Mail money or threaten the job of the person who would otherwise be needed to take you out to your starting point. Several people have posted sound arguments that prove that morally and logically, your actions are threatening yours and your colleagues livelihoods, and exposing you to risk of being held personally liable for any theft of mail from your vehicle.

Then you make this other post about shoes, short-cuts etc etc, which seems totally at odds with your initial post !

Now that can make me draw one of only 2 conclusions.

Either

1. you have realised that using your car is detrimental to yours and everybody else's interests, and are now advocating that we all stop doing these other things that may, in the longer term, also give Royal Mail scope to cut even more duties, OR

2. you are trying to justify using your car by saying that unless we stop doing these other things, not using your car won't make a difference.

Well, if your 'point' is as per the second conclusion, to my mind, that puts you in the same category of absurdity as the postman I know who has claimed 'one or two people are not going to make any difference' when asked why he gave a lift in his car to one of the strike-breakers, just before he himself went and stood on the picket-line

Your position, like his, is untenable. That's why you don't seem able to get your point across

The thing is though not everyone works at the same speed, i've been on my walk for 3 years now and the majority i work to my time but when i'm off on leave and someone younger covers me they finish alot earlier, now what if the manager says well if he can do it in 3 hrs why can't you?

Ironic is when they give you extra work because you finish early or whenever you get sacked because you had post stolen from your car

We are not trying to justify the job based on that. What we are trying to point out to Royal Mail is that we are not under worked and overpaid as we take great pride in our job and want to do it to the benefit of everyone including ourselves. When you work to the rules as RM have laid down it helps point out the absurdity of their position.

Imagine for a moment Spedley, that you were running your own business. You're paying one of your employees eight hours wages per day, five days a week, to do a certain number of tasks. He regularly demonstrates an ability to complete all his tasks well within that time, and goes home early every day. You're not interested really if he's spending his own money to get the job done more quickly - hell, it's coming out of his pocket, you're laughing. Quite literally. But, sooner or later, you're going to get round to thinking one of two things, namely

"if he gets all his work done with time to spare, I'll whack a bigger workload onto his job", or
"when he leaves, there's no way I'm advertising his job as a full-time post. If the tasks can be completed within part-time hours, which he's demonstrated to me that they can, a part-time job is all I'll offer"

How very true Carmoustie.The trouble is Royal Mail encouraged us to "crack on". Mr Leighton's letter in 2003 sais "finish early".
We bought that rubbish.Now look.

If you want the corrosive effect of cars on delivery try these for size:
1. We have at least 2 (young) lads in the DO who are on van duties but PREFER to take their cars on delivery, as they can get finished earlier and don't have to take parcels. The Gaffers love this as it 'frees up a van' to get them out of some hole they have dug for themselves. MADNESS.

2. On other van duties when the duty holder is off they put a 'car user' on the shift and take the van away (again to sort out some sort of mess). Any protestations from the incumbent Postie are met with "well you usually use your car" from the Gaffers.

DON'T ANYBODY TELL ME THAT CAR USE ON DELIVERY IS 'OK'.

I do not have a 318 and am not likely ever to get one. However, I am interested in this observation. Can you point me to some RM documentation which states that the bike should be left at the start of the walk. I have loads of dead walking on mine and have to use the bike to collect bags from the pouch box. Successive managers have for at least 5 years refused to even consider putting in a pouch box.

As I have said in an earlier post our previous union rep (he moved up the chain of command and well deserved it was to) refused to disscuss with our dum the use of cars on delivery as it was against RM's enviromental policies. This should be put to all dum's Royal Mail support all things enviromentally friendly they like to be seen to be GREEN (IN MORE WAY'S THAN ONE). :lfo :lfo :cfo The use of cars on delivery is not good period.
