Christmas Arrangements for CSS Machines - Mail Centres

Royal Mail are attempting to introduce new staffing and training arrangements that have not been agreed by my Department. I was advised by Royal Mail at 19.57 yesterday, Thursday 18th November 2010, that they intend to implement new training arrangements from Monday 22nd November 2010. The purpose behind this reduced training is to avoid paying those additional machine operators TPM Allowance.


I advised the business some time ago that the National Guidelines and training arrangements for those involved in the operation of the machines would need to be applied to ensure they received the appropriate level of allowances. The agreed level of training contained within the Guidelines was designed to ensure employees working on this machinery operate the equipment safely. I understand the business are seeking volunteers to perform work on CSS machines on the basis that they will not receive the full training and as a result will not be eligible for TPM Allowance.


Whilst I cannot legislate for individuals volunteering to perform this work on inferior terms and conditions, I would suggest that it is not in their interest to do so. I have spoken to the business today and they are not, at present, prepared to provide the full training and as a result are not prepared to pay the TPM Allowance therefore I have no alternative other than to provide our members with the Union's National position.


I would appreciate Representatives making our members fully aware of the content of this LTB and that they should not co-operate by volunteering to perform work on CSS machines on inferior terms to their colleagues.

Lets make sure I got this right.

Royal Mail want untrained people to volunteer to work on machines and then they won't train them to the same levels of regular operators and pay them less. Less Training, less pay and more risk.

I can't see all MCs running them at xmas, if they have all their iLSMs doing outward plans all night then they might not be able to do the breakdowns into batches

What A clown health and safety are paramount an untrained worker on equipment with belts and motors how dangerous is that tman yes you would condone it but until somthing goes wrong then you as the mech boss would be held responsible 'corporate culpabillity' is here and you would personaly held to account accidents will and do happen ..why there called accidents yes no doubt one would happen whilst you were drinking your cuppa

Don't know about "pray tell", but who do think runs the mech during the periods of organised chaos that is Christmas? Do you believe they're all regular and/or trained staff?
They can't get enough MC staff in on O/T now the rates are so poor, and they can't train enough casual staff in such a short space of time, so you work out what happens....

It probably is Tman...... because these "volunteers" will no doubt be squealing like pigs when they don't get their TPM money.
"The union sold us down the river,so they did.....etc".
