Georoute Table of Parameters- Speeds & times

Was present during a discussion between CWU Unit Rep and one of the better RM Planners when the Rep asked for an explanation of the walk speeds etc. Planner refused to answer saying only that there were 'variable speeds'.

I have checked the Georoute Delivery Planner Training manual which gives the following information. The Planner said today that this has since been updated, but I haven't seen any update.

Foot Walk speeds - terrain flat 5.95kph - terrain undulating 5.50kph - terrain steep 4.75kph

Calling times Foot delivery 8.0 secs - Cycle delivery 8.1secs - HCT delivery 8.3secs - Town van including shared vans 8.2secs - Rural van delivery 9.1secs

Travel speeds - walk flat 6.44kph - walk undulating 5.50kph - walk steep 4.74kph - walk between delivery points 5.95kph.
lightweight trolley flat 6.11kph - lwt undulating 5.75kph - lwt steep 5.76kph - lwt between delivery points 5.59kph.
high capacity trolley flat 5.98kph - hct undulating 4.90kph - hct steep 5.19kph - hct between delivery points 5.19kph.
Cycle 13.24kph - cycle between delivery points 5.95kph.
Ancillary activities
Replenish pouch at box 55.0 secs - Replenish pouch at safe drop 61.0secs
Distance between floors 13 metres

Van activities
Load shared van (As per IWT) Load singleton van (as per IWT)

Below is an email i recieved a while back,i haven't contacted the guy back as yet,maybe it's time to...

I am a retired work-study consultant and trainer, who spent a lot of time working with and training Royal Mail managers the correct implentation of expectations of workloads.

I read that Royal Mail are expecting their posties to walk at 4 m.p.h. as an average whilst working. This is the concept laid down in the B.S. concerning work-study, but this figure only relates to a male of average stature, and of European origin, walking unladen on level ground, and equates to 100 B.S. performance. These parameters do not apply to the average postie, who is certainly not unladen, nor is he/she always on level ground.Neither does the figure take into account the need for rest and relaxation and environmental allowances.
It would seem that the management of Royal Mail have abandoned all efforts to ensure a safe and acceptable workload for their staff, and have quickly forgotten the valued principles of work-study which once they embraced.

100 B.S is the highest you can get in any work place so realistically it should be around the 85 mark am i right? I see in the letter that you received POSTMAN that he mentions about a male of average stature and of EU origin that this is planned in to the structure of the walks. So planning these walks are only based on the male model and not the female kind, which in my eyes is very demeaning as the female has to keep the same pace as a male. I think we all know that females walk a little slower than us males and is completely unfair of the opposite sex to walk at the same pace as us.

I've used the gyms treadmill going at that pace of 4mph (6.44kph) for 15 minutes and even with nothing on my back and one of the fittest guys in the office and only in my early 30's it did make me think that i've got to be walking at that pace for 4.5hrs . I wonder if RM have ran all this by H&S. I don't know about you but i could probably handle walking at that pace every day but i would be knackered at the end of the day also. This job is leaning more to the young and fit that can go at a pace of 4mph but age does soon catch up on everyone, and everyone at some point in their life won't be as fast as they were 20 years ago. I am not being ageist here, but a walking postie that's in his/her 50's will find it tough to walk next to someone that's in his/her 20's this is discrimination at its finest by royal mail.
