Royal Mail price rises will “jeopardise future of mail”
Monday, November 15th, 2010
Royal Mail proposals to increase the price of business mail by up to 19 per cent will have a devastating effect on the future of mail and deliver a further blow to UK business as they claw their way back from recession, according to the executive director of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), Chris Combemale.
The volume and revenue generated by business post (accounting for 87 per cent of all mail) underpins the provision of mail delivery services for every UK household, otherwise known as the ‘Universal Service’. The DMA has grave concerns that the proposed price rise will jeopardise this service and the future of the industry, creating uncertainty which will prompt businesses to revert to other forms of communication or significantly reduce their mailing volumes. It also believes that for those businesses where mail is the only option, such a hike in prices is unacceptable in the current operating climate.
Chris Combemale, executive director of the DMA, states:
“Modernisation of Royal Mail is indeed essential. However, I believe that their plans to raise funds at the expense of businesses are counter-productive. Experience has shown that once a company has migrated to other media, they don’t come back. This loss in volume and revenue would be a massive blow to both the Universal Service and the mail industry as a whole.
“The DMA is calling on Royal Mail to reconsider their proposal and would welcome the opportunity to discuss its concerns.”

And the reality is that other forms of advertising don't work nearly as good as a piece of mail dropping through your door. Email is no good for starters as most will be filtered and ignored then deleted and text msgs will become annoying and so that won't work either. Mail is here for good chaps, don't believe the hype of electronic media cos it's all crap. Businesses shouldn't have deserted RM in the first place, reap what you so and all that..............

This will be our bread and butter work along with eBay packets, social mail will be on the way out which go via Emails, texting and IMs, what is clear is that we need a level playing field with DSAs.Phantom wrote:And the reality is that other forms of advertising don't work nearly as good as a piece of mail dropping through your door. Wow. What a narrow-minded, self-interested press release. Ticking up the prices will doom our whole recovery? Please.
Look buddy, these modest increases will secure the future for part-time postal workers living in West London, thus bringing in a whole new era of peace and prosperity for the entire nation.

The only thing jeopardising Royal mail is useless articles like this one. Oh and DSA and the threat of privatisation. Thats the 3 counterproductive issues one should be arguing against if you are really pro Uk businesses Mr Coombebad.

He ain't pro uk business "The DMA promotes the interests of it's corporate members", some might label the approach sectarian ,but that's got bad connotations, suffice to say ,you do more work for less money so I get a bigger bonus. But you must ask what his beef is since the fella is so well paid by the Evision brigade who he reckons will profit from any change
