What MP Anna Soubry is saying

IN view of the number of correspondences published within the Nottingham Post in the past few days in regard to Anna Soubry, MP for Broxtowe, I believe it is both necessary and appropriate to outline the following on behalf of my union and the postal workers it represents.

On the October 27, Anna Soubry stood up in Parliament during the debate on the coalition Government's plans to break up and privatise the Royal Mail and said: "In my constituency there are 700 postal workers at the Beeston Sorting Office.

"To my knowledge, not one of them has written to urge me not to support the Bill. Two of them came to the Commons today to ask me not to support it-two in 700." (Taken from the House of Common Hansard on the Postal Services Bill debate).

However, on October 15, the Broxtowe MP wrote in a local journal, the Beeston Express, bellyaching that she would have to reply to some "300 campaign postcards" which she had received from individual constituents urging her to oppose the proposed sell off of the Royal Mail (MPs receive free postage).

Then, on November 2, responding in the Nottingham Post to the accusation of misleading Parliament, Anna Soubry was quoted as saying that she had only discovered such letters from postal workers on her return to her office after speaking in Parliament.

Whilst some may choose to give Anna Soubry the benefit of doubt, what is not in question is the simple fact that when the MP stood up in Parliament to claim that she had not been written to, she had two weeks earlier released an article claiming the complete opposite.

I believe the MP tried to embarrass two local postal workers and constituents of hers who had travelled to the House of Commons as part of a 300-strong CWU delegation to lobby MPs against the Government plans to sell off the Royal Mail on October 27.

Maybe getting time off work at short notice is easy for MPs, but for the remainder of us in the real world getting time off work to lobby Parliament is not so easy, in particular when you consider that only one week's advance notice was given by the Government about this debate on the Royal Mail.

For any MP of any political party, and irrespective of their own political stance, to make such an unnecessary and clearly disparaging remark about their constituents is shameful.

We can only assume that her actions were an attempt to justify her support for a policy not set out in the Conservative Party election manifesto.

It's a policy which will result in the break-up and privatisation of the Royal Mail, the closure of more Post Offices, and the loss of local postal workers jobs.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
