A Royal Mail reorganisation has led to a backlog of post in Leeds and is being labelled a "disaster" by postmen and customers.
New machines have been introduced at sorting offices in Leeds and across the UK as Royal Mail battles to modernise to meet the demands of modern Britain.

However, one customer from Moortown claimed to have received no mail for a fortnight – and then all of it in one Sunday afternoon delivery.

Another resident from Chapel Allerton claimed to have been waiting for a fortnight for a camera bought on auction site eBay.

One unhappy customer told the YEP her husband resorted to driving to their local sorting office to find out why they'd had no mail.

She said: "We were told a backlog had built up since a new system was introduced and everything was behind as a result.

"There were bills we had to pay in our missing mail; luckily we sorted them out but we could have ended up with a bad credit rating through no fault of our own."

Another customer admitted he was concerned when the camera he had ordered on Ebay didn't turn up, but refrained from putting critical feedback online until he'd spoken to his postman.

He told the YEP: "He (the postman] told me there were parcels and packages sitting at the sorting office for days which hadn't been touched since they arrived.

"What I can't understand is, if the system has broken down so badly, why can't they just go back to the old methods until things have settled down?"

Meanwhile, posties are claiming they're feeling the pressure of new working practices and struggling to meet demand.

One Royal Mail employee working in a Leeds suburb claimed the system
had been rushed in, with Royal Mail trying to compensate by offering staff overtime.

He said: "The problem is, no one wants to do more work when they're already exhausted trying to keep up. I used to enjoy this job but I'm not sure I'll be staying much longer.

"The system's failing completely and what's going to happen when Christmas mail starts arriving is a real worry."

Another postman claimed 15 people now man the night shift at the sorting office serving the LS1 and LS2 areas, which used to operate with just three.

He also said eight people had been removed from delivery rounds to bolster overnight staffing levels, with deliveries now starting an hour later.

He said: "The postmen are all stressed and very unhappy. We are supposed to be working from 5pm to 1pm but we end up working until 3pm without a break.

"People are just so tired. We have tried to tell management about the problems but they just won't listen. The mail is getting later and later; residents and busineses have started complaining."

A Royal Mail spokesman said the new sorting machinery - and significant changes to its delivery operation across the UK - are part of a £2bn investment and modernisation programme.

He said: "We urgently need to respond to the huge growth in electronic communications and the resulting decline in overall mail volumes which in the UK means there are now 13 million fewer letters posted every day compared with five years ago.

"The operational review has been undertaken on the basis of a national agreement reached earlier this year between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers' Union, endorsed by postmen and women in a
national ballot.

"We are working hard to implement these major changes with minimum disruption to service but we apologise to any customers who have experienced delays as the new systems bed in."

I'm the customer quoted in Chapel Allerton waiting for a camera. I'm not actually in Chapel Allerton, but close by. Didn't want to give the reporter my actual area as I didn't want to get my postman into trouble.
Spoke to the reporter on Friday after my package didn't turn up and I spoke to the postman who informed em of all the problems they're having, then we had no delivery on Saturday, no delivery today. I'm waiting for 5 packages now, this sucks.
I don't understand, as the new system clearly isn't working, why they aren't going back to the old one that worked!
With Christmas coming up, why not use the old system until January and then perhaps start experimenting with new deliveries.

Since that post I looked at a couple more threads and realised that!
It's ridiculous how management, with no idea of the reality of how deliveries work, can sit in an office and decide the most efficient way to do deliveries! They obviously have no idea of the logistics involved.
I find in all businesses those 'higher up' have an assumed sense of better understanding, that they can advise those underneath them how better to do their job. From what I gather no one who's 'on the ground' was asked by the management if they thought the new system would work.
It sucks I haven't got my packages, but I feel most sorry for all the staff in the sorting offices, and postmen on their rounds who have to deal with managements f**k-ups.
