I voted 'YES', without reading any topic replies, based on my initial thoughts - but I know in time I'd regret the reduction of service as even more jobs are lost. Sadly, many posties would agree to a RM sell-off if they thought it would bring a Mon-Fri work pattern. :no no

Don't you think that might be why the idea has surfaced at this of all times?

And a well placed thought too, there will be many more sound bites before the hammer falls, like the latest from Moya - DSA will be competitively priced, we all have to pull together to survive, modernisation is helping to increase profits/keep costs down - or put another way "look how attractive we are to a potential buyer"

Totally agree that the "talk" of no Saturday deliveries is a smoke screen that will blind some posties, the sight of a few ££££ will win over a few more and the lure of "shares" will please some.

Not for me - I believe in a wholly publically owned Royal Mail.

Likewise, but the propaganda has been very effective thus far. The wider public have faced fabrication and obfuscation in terms of Royal Mail and its productivity, and thus do not believe that a public-owned postal service is capable of being functional, efficient and profitable. In fact, it is none of those three at present and is only likely to deteriorate. Nevertheless, handled appropriately and, dare I say it, with an injection of TLC, Royal Mail is perfectly capable of turning over a profit, however insubstantial, and living up to its responsibility in respect of the general public. Unfortunately, the knives are out for RM from all sides and the result will be (for the umpteenth time when any politician gets involved) a worse service at greater expense, with any of the potential profits going to a foreign owner. I have no doubt that somebody somewhere will make RM profitable very quickly once they get a hold of it, because it's not exactly difficult when you're going to be given a monopoly. However, the reality of that shall be the gradual erosion of workers' rights, a readily recyclable work-force, and a service that is based around providing the minimum service for the absolute minimum expense (to the company rather than the customer). If that's the future we feel is appropriate for one of our most important public services (and it remains very important, no matter what some may think with the rise of other mediums of communication) then we end up with the service we deserve. Just as we have ended up with the half-broken country that we deserve as we lurch ever closer from democracy to a tangential, neo-fascist state where the poor work for the rich and the politicians are answerable to no-one but themselves.

More progress. Yay.

I think the rot has already set in for deliveries. If there is a genuine fall in mail volumes, then why didn't CWU and Unite/CMA not go to the head of RM and get them to lobby government to cut the Saturday delivery? As a result of NOT taking that action, the introduction of more and more part timers was inevitable. Only by chopping Saturday will we be able to defend full time jobs. As it is, RM had to take on a sixth more staff to cover the days off with the introduction of the 5 day week. This proved to be very expensive. This encouraged RM to hasten the introduction of MORE part time staff. A massive own goal by our glorious union leaders in Wimbledon. :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause

We could make more profit if we ditched Monday Wednesday and Friday deliveries too ; specially in those rurally sort of places. Common sense in it ,if profit is your "overarching" objective.
I'm sure you can work out the consequences for service and jobs :chuckle

Why bother with the rurals at all B?
Make them come to town for their mail like the good old days.
In fact why bother with deliveries at all...charge everybody to come to us for their mail.
Machines to sequence the mail and half a dozen guys to throw it up in racks for the punters to come and get it.
Think of the savings...think of the profits. :cuppa

:hmmmm Too much like self service. You've got to maintain the pretence of a value added service if you want to extract the profit. You can push it too far :chuckle

As strange as it is i prefer 'personally' the 4 day week to the Mon-Fri thing.

Of course, you'd only get the chance of 1 day docket instead of 2.........
