Halesowen postie who could not cope dumped mail

A Halesowen postman dumped hundreds of letters in a river and stashed another 2,800 in his car because he could not cope with delivering them.

But at Warwick Crown Court Rory Bain, who had admitted causing damage and delaying postal packages, escaped a prison sentence after spending the weekend in jail on remand.

Instead Bain, aged 20, was given a 12-month sentence suspended for two years and was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

Prosecutor John Dove had told the court that Bain had begun work with the Royal Mail as a trainee postman in September last year, based at the Coombes Wood delivery office in Halesowen.

Bain, of Johnson Place, Henley-in-Arden, was suspended in May after a gardener at Wootton Hall in Wootton Wawen, near Warwick, fished out a black bin bag full of waterlogged post from weir on the River Alne.

Royal Mail investigators found four more bin bags and two loose bundles of mail in the river, recovering 610 postal packets postmarked between October 30 and March 8 – which meant Bain had started to dump mail within six weeks of starting work. A further 2,800 letters were found dumped in his car.

Mr Dove added that the undelivered mail included 917 postal voting forms for the general election.

Bain blamed the weather for not being able to keep up with delivering all of the post, so stashed what was left in his car - but it began to build up, and as his car got full with mail he decided he was “going to have to get rid of it.”

He said he was on his way to his mother’s home in Henley and, when he went over the bridge in Wootton Wawen decided to dump some of it in the river.

Nick Devine, defending, said Bain had no previous convictions and had not been stealing from the letters, and asked the judge to take “an exceptional course” and pass a suspended sentence.

Shoudn't be laughing at something so serious, but it seems almost impossible to get rid of 'the evidence'! so Many times over the years,it comes back to haunt the perpetrators!
It seems you can get rid of a body more easily! On a more serious note, maybe it's time to bring back the 'old ways' When I first started many moons ago, for the first few weeks you were on your walk, you were indeed 'tested' and spied on. This took many forms, from your Manager 'prepping' in part of your walk before you started (the only time they prepped in then), with numerous deliberate missorts, to frequent bag checks, to constantly popping up on the streets! this was common practice then and soon sorted out those with ill intent, although in all fairness, because you were new, they did overlook genuine mistakes. And, in the main it worked. go back to about that time, and there were very few stories of this ilk

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
