Royal Mail brings in Sunday deliveries to fight Dundee East office backlog

http://www.thecourier.co.uk/News/Dundee ... cklog.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Managers from depots as far afield as Edinburgh have been drafted to sort mail at the West Pitkerro base, as Royal Mail chiefs battle to clear the backlog and get the new process working better before the Christmas peak period begins.

The Courier has been inundated with messages from angry customers — and aggrieved Dundee East postal workers — since we revealed the problems in our paper on Friday.

Customers in the DD4 and DD5 delivery areas are angry at not receiving mail all week, and postal workers have complained that the new delivery arrangement has utterly failed.

Last Monday saw the introduction of the new system, called the Way Forward, with postmen and women working in pairs from single vans delivering letters and parcels. Previously, parcels were delivered separately.

Staff claim their rounds have become too long and demanding, and have been unable to complete them within normal working hours. They have been returning to the depot with undelivered mail for the next day, only for the pattern to be repeated.

The scene inside the depot has been described as "chaos" with drafted-in managers joining regular staff in scrambling around sorting the mail and packing it out for distribution.

An email to The Courier late on Friday from an anonymous postman said, "Dundee East has been in for four days now — 27 yorks (trolleys) of live mail unsorted, dates from the end of October."

It continued, "Nightshifts every night — managers from Angus, Perth and Fife sorting all afternoon. No coffees to be drunk, no phone calls — we are open Sunday from 8am to 4pm for sorting, preparing and delivering parcels."

The postman said the walk layouts were "hilarious," and he added, "It's an often-used word in our office but it's a shambles."

Another contacted us to say, "I am a postman at Dundee East and I too haven't received any mail since last week.

Gamble
"Royal Mail are trying very hard to implement these changes but so close to Christmas I wonder if it might be a gamble too far in an already struggling business."

Shirley Dobbie wrote, "I live in the DD5 postal area and we were having problems with the mail before last week. Along with other people in the street we worked out that we had no mail from the 21st to 28th of October.

"Following numerous complaints, we had a very small delivery the next day. I still think there is a week's worth of mail that was never delivered.

"My sister sent postcards from Perth in Australia, and while they managed to arrive on the island of Westray in Orkney, I have not received mine. We did get post today but had none on Thursday or Friday."

Royal Mail said it was doing all it could to clear the backlog and hoped it would be cleared by the early part of this week.

Pointing out that mail was being delivered on Sunday, she apologised to customers for the disruption and stressed that it was working as hard as possible to address the problems

and so It begins ........................ :chuckle

the fightback has started, Posties have been pushed so far, they are now turning, nobody to come in early, nobody able to complete, the planners fully expected them to carry on as before coming in early, not taking break and work for free, it stops here :dance

My Office did the job properly last year for 2 weeks, complete chaos and dockets galore, Managers drafted in, we proved a point, it was all soon forgotten the week after it was all over, personally i think we should have carried on every week til doomsday and I said so, nobody listened, you reap what you sow.

Unbelievable today, worst iv ever seen, a manager for every 12 postmen, - theres 120 of us posties there, clipboards and stopwatches everywhere, prep tests , even tho overhead layouts were changed at weekend, its a disgrace,all the senior -----------! are there, suits and polished shoes, laptops everywhere.The bullyin and harrassing has started big time.
Huddle took place, TELLING posties they WILL HAVE TO GIVE 30 MINS FLEXING today or tomorrow, union rep was no where, and those who refused to flex were told if they dont flex tomorrow, they will be conduct coded and have there pay stopped!

Some guys have 18- yes.....18 trays of mail at there frame, and as many as 6 bags of packets, its sickening.

Its reduced 3 of our most honest and hardworking lads to near breakdown, one even comes in an hour early, and i do now feel a bit for him, hes despairing that the place is going tits up, and hes an efficient and loyal, hard worker.

Still, those high up reckon "weve sen worse" and we will get throo it!!!!
By that time, some o they lads on nightshitf overtime, and sunday on scheduled, will be near millionaires!!!!!!

Its a pity you couldnt see pics o the place, but its no worth losing your job for.

He's playing Shimmy because of...

However equally the scare stories on here must all be from the 156 offices and not the 13 hundred odd who have yet to deploy. Lets keep things real !!

Whats that going to cost them ? Pride goes before a fall, they would rather commit commercial suicide before admitting they are wrong.

http://www.thecourier.co.uk/News/Dundee ... ffice.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Tayside Fire and Rescue is to inspect Royal Mail's Dundee East delivery depot after hearing concerns the mountain of undelivered mail inside is contributing to a fire risk.
