CWU says Royal Mail results are a wake-up call

The Communication Workers Union today says Royal Mail's half-year results send a clear message that regulation is failing the UK's postal service. CWU calls on the government to change the Postal Services Bill to address the chronic problems with regulation, pricing controls and pension payments.

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "This is a wake-up call for the UK's postal network. Royal Mail will be set up by government to fail unless change comes quickly.

"Today's results are the strongest argument yet for keeping Royal Mail publicly-owned and fully integrated. Overall there was a Group profit and the quality of service has been maintained. Would anyone expect a private company to provide the universal service and good quality of service in this context? We think not."

Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said: "These stark results leave us in no doubt that regulation of Letters and unfair pricing controls are strangling Royal Mail. In our opinion, pricing and regulation - not mail volumes - are the main factors here. Mail volumes fell by less than the same period last year but the loss of 2.5p per item to competitors to deliver their mail is a recipe for disaster.

"There is no private company better placed than Royal Mail to deal with the challenges in the postal industry. The modernisation programme is fully-funded and is already delivering productivity improvements. If the pension issue is dealt with by government, Royal Mail’s cashflow will go into the black by removing the £282 million annual deficit payments."

CWU represents all non-managerial staff in Royal Mail and is opposed to moves by the government to break-up and privatise the company. CWU argues that removal of the pension deficit and minimal changes to the regulatory regime could bring the company over £400m in additional revenue each year.

Dave Ward says, "the modernisation programme is fuly-funded and is already delivering productivity improvements", eh?
Where, Dave, where? :hmmmm

And isn't Dave kinda the wrong sort of person to be pontificating on productivity, seeing as he's about as productive as a company director?
I know what I think. :cuppa

Bring An End To Unfair Competition!!!

Post by John1028 »

So Royal Mail have reported a massive loss in profits, compared to this time last year?? So at the end of the day why now should we be helping our competitors cream off our profits and leave us with all the costs??!!! This is ludicrous and must STOP now!!! I know loads of people are sick to the back teeth delivering mail for TNT, DHL etc, they should be told if they want it delivered DO IT YOURSELF, then we'd see how smug they were!!! It really pisses me off in the mornings looking at my frame and seeing nothing but competitors mail waiting to be delivered!! It really is putting the boot in for us as a company!! Surely something can be done??!!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
