Having said that, providing depot managers were present, they could still enforce indoor work on everyone, just like when we had deliveries cancelled on H&S grounds during the Xmas week last year (unbelieveably slippery ice on roads and pavements, on the outskirts of a south coast city). Oh yes, we had fun those three days, doing "deads" and surcharges, yet managers seemed to miss some staff playing cards! :chuckle
Up north we had unbelieveably slippery ice on roads and pavements during the Xmas week last year continuing for most of January but there was no suggestion that we wouldn't go out as normal on deliveries.
It was the same in our office in Northern Ireland they came after the ice and snow had gone and said that we did"nt have to go out on the days that the weather was treacherous a bit to late. :arrrghhh

To simplify things, no manager present = no working! simples!!!!
Reason is 1974 Health & Safety at work act.
Here are a few senarios to consider.

Fire in a mail center, who is there to monitor and comply with the 1971 fire act ( signing on sheets etc)??? ans. no one....oops = fines etc.
Posty out on delivery attacked by a dog and taken to hospital and looses a finger. Who is there to a) tell next of kin,
b) tell H&S Executive???? Oops no one = fines.
Driver has an accident in a van & needs recovery, Police contact CPC but no one answers = Van is impounded = fines + costs.
Posty has an accident on duty, no manager = gross neglagence by RM for allowing it to happen. Postal staff should not be on the premisses or on duty.

This same priciple applied during the miners strike in 1984 when NACODS (Health & Safety supervisors) withdrew their labour from working pits that were privately owned and not part of NCB. The HSE instructed that no-one was allowed to work without a supervisor present! Period.
So I would think that the same still applies and if anything the law would also encompas EU law too.
So nos boss = No work, but we should still get paid. :Very Happy

so whats the difference on saturdays, when managers go home once the workers leave the sorting offices? surely suppervision is still required on return or untill such time as the premises are vacated, on this basis the manager should be the last person to leave.

Does this mean that we should return to office when manager wishes to leave early? H&S after all :Very Happy

Grind to a halt

I don't think so,The managers in our office go home as soon as they can and leave us with no one so will it or does it apply to that situation?

I believe there are enough trained acting staff to do the job of a manager.

Managers should only do work respective to thier grade and not do any of ours

we wish they would only do thier work, they should not be doing our work anyway, they gave it up to be a manager so why do it now.

They have a duty of care toward us and from what i saw last winter where staff were told to go out in some of the worst weather we have had in years and some of the injury's that staff had was bad enough,so please lets have less of the Health and Safety talk as they pay no attention to it now and never will in the future.

Could be because of "An eye for an eye" or even "Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you"....personally I think a lot of it comes down to an individual's experience on the pickets in '07 & '09, and afterwards - if managers walked through quietly, accepted the banter, and got on with their job, I'd feel sympathetic for them ( and worry how long before it's the turn of OPGs ), but if they bragged about the money they earned, flicked the bird at strikers, then banged on at bonus time about how much they got ( knowing we get F. A. ), then I'd think, "What goes around, comes around".

Personally I have not decided - tbh I'm waitng to see if it's support mgrs only or across the business before I really think about it - but frankly I'm a little bit amazed that there has been a proliferation of staff in the management grades, with a reduction of staff in the postal grades yet managers are surprised that RM are turning on them now!
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

We have had to cross CWU picket lines during the 2007 dispute, when the CWU called different shifts out at different times.
The difference is that we don't do the work of people on strike. The managers did our work when we were on strike,
but I would not do their work if they were to strike.

:chuckle Yep ,there's always a reason why you shouldn't put yourself out to support somebody taking action to maintain their terms and conditions, and I've heard them all from management grades :left: :left: :left: :left:
