Telling them they have to opt out of D2D's doesn't tend to help the situation.
No they don't have to opt out, if they don't want it you don't post it, what rights do RM have to tell people they have to contact them to opt out, if not they get them.

They/We have a contractual obligation with the company sending the D2D in the same way they do with you when you post a letter.
Royal Mail do not have a right to decide what is and isn't "junk" and neither do you.
We deliver...that's all...what the recipient does with it after we fulfil our contractual obligation is up to them.

So ......if they don't want their council tax bill, we don't deliver?
Or if they don't want their TV licence renewal request, we don't deliver.
They won't want stuff from the CSA...
Is there somewhere an exhaustive list of stuff we don't deliver because the customer doesn't like it?

Council tax is the law, if you don't want a tv licence don't watch tv, CSA, keep it in your pants, although RM ponce it up as live mail to it's staff,it is still junk mail to households and if a householder tells you not to deliver to him/her you don't deliver.

They have to opt out

it took me a good five minutes to find this in the depths of the RM website, and they don't make it easy for people, which is probably why not many do it, I reckon it should be made a lot easier for people to opt out.
Controlling your mail
Opting out of Royal Mail's Door to Door service

If you want to stop receiving unaddressed mail delivered by Royal Mail to your home you can do so by contacting us at the address below. However, there are a few things you should consider before doing this:

1. The opt out service only relates to unaddressed mail. Royal Mail is still legally obliged to deliver all addressed mail, which includes mail that is addressed “To the Occupier” (or with any other generic recipient information), as well as mail that is personally addressed to you by name.

2. It is not possible for Royal Mail to separate material you don’t want from material that you do want, such as advertising offers or leaflets from Central and Local Government and other public bodies. Opting out from Royal Mail Door to Door stops all unaddressed items from being delivered by us (although we would work with Government to get a message to every UK address in exceptional circumstances). Election material is not delivered by the Door to Door service and is therefore not affected by this opt out.

3. Opting out means no one at the address will receive unaddressed mail items - is this acceptable to everyone living at the property?

4. Please be aware that Royal Mail only delivers about 25% of the total volume of unaddressed mail items in the United Kingdom. The opt out will not cover any other distributors, who will continue to deliver unaddressed mail items. Opting out of Royal Mail Door to Door deliveries will not necessarily reduce by a significant amount of the number of items that you will receive, as there are other carriers in the market place.

If you would like to stop any other unwanted communications please visit mydm.co.uk (new window) which provides details on all other preference services, or call 0845 703 4599.

If you wish to opt out of receiving Door to Door mail items, please send or email your name and address to the address below:

Freepost RRBT-ZBXB-TTTS
Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Outs
Kingsmead House
Oxpens Road
OXFORD
OX1 1RX

or email: optout@royalmail.com

We will then send an opt-out form to your address, which you must sign and return. We do this for security reasons - to verify that those resident at the address have requested the ‘opt out’.

Once you’ve returned this form, Royal Mail will stop delivering unaddressed items to your address within 6 weeks.

Hang on.

I thought that customers were perfectly entitled to refuse a piece of mail that is addressed to them? It has happened to me and I presumed that's what the 'refused' tick box on the stickers is for. If it happened to me with a d2d, seeing as it's 'live mail', I'd put the same sticker on and RTS.

Heh! my mother does that, she also uses the prepaid envelopes to send their crap back.

It seems that most days on S/A there is that weeks D2D jammed in letterboxes on collections.

Were talking about "no junk mail" stickers on doors not customers handing back mail they don't want and btw you shouldn't really take mail back from customers either although i know most of us do...you should tell them to endorse it and shove it in a post box.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

D2D is opt out , if the householder can be bothered to do that, otherwise R.M assumes they opted in (like with PHORM etc). We are paid to deliver it, so... we deliver it or get sacked maybe. I just post mine (those put through my letterbox) back to R.M.
Sorry for the Welsh etc posties who got so wet today. It was really nice where I was.

MORAL OF THE STORY IS IF THEY HAVE WE DONT WANT D2D U MUST STILL DELIVER IT AS IT MAY BE A TEST AS THEY HAVENT OFFICIALLY OPTED OUT

BEWARE

I WOULD SUGGEST STUFFING A OPT OUT LEAFTLET THROUGH ALONG WITH THE D2D IF THERE IS SUCH A THING SO THAT THE CUSTOMER KNOWS U ARE NOT TAKING THE PISS

I wouldn't do that, a postman got suspended for telling his customers how to opt out!
