The local president of the union representing postal workers in Terrace says his members have some safety concerns about the new Ford Transit Connect delivery vans that have recently gone into service.

Tom La Porte with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the vans have many good features, such as front wheel drive, but workers prefer vehicles that are right hand drive.

"It's pretty clear for safety reasons that the right hand drive is better and safer. It can be very dangerous on narrow roads, not just in the rural areas where they definitely need them, but even in the city."

Canada Post announced in March nearly 1,200 Transit Connects would be purchased this year.

The Crown corporation chose that model based on criteria such as environmental impact, cargo capacity and operating costs.
