CHURCH leaders are furious with Royal Mail bosses who ditched Christian images on Christmas stamps in favour of children’s favourites Wallace and Gromit.

Last night, the Archbishop of Canterbury was being asked to take action, just two days before the stamps go on sale.

The plasticine stars of The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit will appear on seven different stamps but those wanting a religious theme have only one choice, the image of the Madonna and Child that has been on sale for the past three years.

Last year, Royal Mail offered five religious designs, based on nativity scenes from stained-glass windows of different churches.

Critics claim the switch to Wallace and Gromit, with images of Gromit about to be hit by a snowball by his arch enemy Feathers McGraw and being made to wear an ill-fitting woolly jumper, is a cynical bid by Royal Mail bosses to boost profits and ignores the true meaning of Christmas.

One outraged cleric is the Rev Hugh Hoskins, team rector for St Mary’s Church in Upavon, Wiltshire. Last year, a nativity scene from a stained-glass window of his church featured on the Christmas stamps. He said: “I will be writing to the Archbishop of Canterbury to protest in the strongest possible terms.”

“If you can’t have nativity scenes on stamps at Christmas then when can you? I like Wallace and Gromit, it’s good entertainment, but let’s have a balance.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We have distributed tens of millions of the Madonna and Child stamps to go on sale alongside the Wallace and Gromit stamps.”

I never get the point of putting religious images on stamps. You have this beautiful image of the Madonna and Our Lord... and then you smear ink all across it when you cancel it. Bit of a mixed message, no?

More from the Desmond-press-stories-that-aren't-true department... the Sunday Express told us yesterday that the Royal Mail has banned religion.

The story - an exclusive because it's untrue - told readers that the country's postal service has "ditched Christian images on Christmas stamps in favour of children's favourites Wallace and Gromit."

The truth emerged in the final paragraph in a quote from a Royal Mail spokeswoman: "We have distributed tens of millions of the Madonna and Child stamps to go on sale alongside the Wallace and Gromit stamps."

In other words, people have a choice of stamps. Christianity is safe. Note also the falsehood in the intro, which began: "Church leaders are furious..."

In fact, it was built around a statement by a single "outraged cleric". Step forward Hugh Hoskins, rector of Upavon, Wiltshire, who, according to the Sunday Express, is planning to write to the Archbishop of Canterbury to protest "in the strongest possible terms."

Would this be the same Hugh Hoskins who, just one year ago, was enjoying the publicity emanating from the Royal Mail having chosen a window from his church to feature on its 2009 Christmas stamps?

At the time, he told a BBC reporter: "My wife wrote to the Royal Mail two years ago to say that there were too many secular scenes on their stamps and not enough images of the nativity or the church at Christmas."

I doubt that the Sunday Express bothered to check that Hoskins has "form."

I also doubt whether the paper's proprietor, Richard Desmond, cares about his papers' continual lying, exaggeration and fakery. After all, no week passes without several examples.

"Royal Mail bans religion" so that means they refuse to deliver Christmas cards and are getting rid of the prayer rooms in larger Mail Centres ? Well, no, not quite, they're just sticking to the usual policy of in alternate years having just two out of nine Christmas stamps with a religious theme.
