Nice idea, but whatever UNITE might agree with the CWU, the reality is that ops managers would continue to strikebreak, threaten
and victimise CWU members.
In the last disputes in 2007 and 2009, UNITE asked them not to do the work of striking CWU members. Did they take any notice?

That was because of specific threats from the top that were leaked in a memo written by senior management. It asked for lists to be compliled of managers who wouldn't work and detailed reprecussions.

Here is a copy of the email from the CMA detailing the threats to managers as mentioned above.

Subject: Volunteering to assist during periods of CWU Industrial Action

Colleagues,

We have become aware, over the last couple of days, that excessive pressure is being placed on individuals to serve on the counter during the current round of CWU industrial action. It has been reported that if an individual makes either a request to change office, or states that they are unavailable to assist, then they are being 'advised' that their name will be placed on a list and reported to a Director.

We are writing to Alan Cook, MD POLtd, to inform him that this behaviour, from very senior managers, within POLtd is not acceptable. We have seen a couple of documents which state that everyone should be on the counter, and that it is not considered acceptable for a female to be asked to be excused because she is pregnant!

The business has asked for volunteers from amongst managers to assist. If you are happy to do so, then there is no issue. However, should you not be willing to assist, then this is also acceptable. A volunteer is just that, a volunteer. Also, you should be free to change your mind if you find that, having previously volunteered, you find it difficult to continue to do so.

I would ask that, in the event that you find yourself being pressured into agreeing to serve on the counter, you let either myself or Carol Daykin aware of the instance immediately.

Yours
