Plea for help to keep Bourne sorting office open

PEOPLE power is needed to help postman battling to keep Bourne’s sorting office open.

Staff at the sorting office in West Street are fighting against a proposal to move operations out of the town and are calling on the public to support their petition.

Royal Mail has proposed to move the sorting office, which employs between 25 and 30 people, by early next year.

The move is being fought by the Communications Workers Union, which says that the office could be moved to Spalding but this has not been confirmed by Royal Mail.

A petition is being run at the delivery office.

The union’s branch secretary Michael Williams said of the move: “It will have the knock-on effect of people getting from whatever office they are based at so delivery times will be later.

“There will be an effect on the environment as the postmen will be travelling backwards and forwards.”

Royal Mail spokesman Sally Hopkins said: “We are still talking to our people about initial proposals to close Bourne Delivery Office.

“Customer service will be our top priority if these changes are made and it is our intention to retain local facilities for people to collect any mail that could not be delivered.

“As mail volumes decline nationally and there is less mail to deliver, we are making changes to the way our people work, and where necessary staff may be relocated, but our agreements with the union set out an agreed approach to managing these changes and we will be working very closely together to support our people.”

What are these agreements management have signed up to ? If a small DO moves to a big office can they tell you to turn up on Monday morning somewhere else miles away ? I would want more out of it than just petrol money for a couple of years. Could you lose your duty the next time the big office has a re-sign ?

you get the difference in traveling costs compared to traveling to the old DO for 2 years IIRC
theres not really going to be a bargaining position if they are closing the DO

True - when they are closing or merging offices I am afraid beyond campaigning against it before it happens there is not much apart from quitting RM that you can do when the actual move occurs.
