POST office staff were left terrified as robbers armed with a gun and a sledgehammer went on the rampage.
The thugs bid to rob the office on Vicarage Lane, Marton, was thwarted by the courageous staff.

They refused to hand over cash from behind a protective glass screen and activated an emergency alarm.

The raiders fled empty handed, but not before they smashed up the shop with the sledgehammer.

Police are now hunting for the dangerous robbers who struck at around 11.30am yesterday when no customers were in the shop.

Det Insp Becky Smith, from Blackpool CID, said: "The two members of staff in the shop were left visibly shaken. They were lucky not to have been injured.

"There was the postmaster and the assistant in there at the time.

"The men entered the shop demanding cash and when the postmaster refused to hand money over began causing damage. They fled when they heard the alarm, thankfully there were no customers in there at the time."

Witnesses watched in horror as the two men fled the scene at the busy junction with Daggers Hall Lane.

Beverley Smith, who works in nearby tanning shop Sunsation, told The Gazette: "I couldn't believe it when I heard the post office's alarm going off, I ran into the street and just saw people staring at the shop."
