spot on clash there is also the fact that staff dont complain because then they would have to do it, so once again the selfish me,me,me brigade kill the job by looking at the smaller picture
It might help them to speak up if they had clear concise direction from HQ.
I know it's gone to stage 3 disagreement several times and promises have been made right up to the point of letters being sent to DOMs from senior management but as usual we are left with nothing concrete to wave in managers faces.
Managers are not allowed to cut&tip,do IPS or prep in our office but tbh...i don't think any of them could manage it if they wanted to.

If I can present the other side of the coin;

In our office we currently have 6 vacancies and 3 long term sick. The expectation is that once we have had an office revision we will lose a number of duties.

The DOM has deliberately chosen not to take people on, only to disappoint them and get rid of them after the office revision has taken place. The vast majority of the time he has been able to cover the absences through people working either their rest days or overtime on the day. This suits the majority in the office. The extra income has funded all manner of beneficial changes for us in our private lives.

However, there has been the odd occasion when he has not been to cover the duties from available staff and he and/or a lino have been forced to pound the pavements themselves. Far from being upset about this the office is actually behind him and we don’t get on his case for doing this.

I guess a lot depends on the circumstances within your own office but for us the current situation works well.

It's not uncommon on Lates to see ours pushing Yorks around and bundle-busting.

It's obviously a default gene-pool thing.. :whistle

spilie,
No ones got the boot, that's the point. People who have left of their own accord have not been replaced, because come the revision the likelihood is that jobs will go, rather than take someone on only to dash their hopes 6 months later.

no ones got the boot they have just left, well thats all right here was me thinking the workforce was shrinking  , greed is the driving force nowadays, the i`m alright jack mentality is rife in britain, just look how we react to the biggest attack on the poorest in britain compared to how the french react, i know there will be greedy french workers but at least they have some willing to stand up, i know it seems a long way from the topic but they are linked, give them an inch and ...... ah well am away to shove a small child up a chimney

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

In my office the managers spend all morning on IPS and then they prep duties (they will even cover delivery if forced to) but they are saving at least 30 hours per week  , I personally think that they are doing it to save themselves from the bosses dragging them over the coals for not meeting their budget.

Plus, our managers are only acting up so they will find themselves back to being deliveries as soon as it suits senior management.

Does that not tell you something that the dom has nothing better to do than to do postmans work! If there is no work available for the dom inside his/her office then i think the dom needs to go...now that would save money. Personally i don't think we need half the doms in this country, imagine the savings RM would make :Very Happy

our managers start at 5 and finish at about 4. it seems obvious they are being told to fill in the hours by getting stuck in plus do all the manager paper work etc after. 2 years ago managers would be finished at 1pm most days. now its never before 3. tbh i like my managers they are real people person and i know there doing what they do because of their boss's and their boss's and their boss's but its not fair. even through summer its like this. one friday my manager delievered three walks!! was out till 7pm. about 7 ppl phoned in sick but jesus are they like this because it effects their bonus???

Covering indoor work and covering delivery are two completely different things.
If by cutting/tipping, prepping and working on IPS they are creating an illusion of excess indoor hours, which they are then using to justify lapsing , then they aren't "helping".

I understand the reasons behind the recruitment freeze.
Glasgow Mail Centre has/will have approximately 20 spare bodies after changes to their workplan and the Glasgow area has 22 vacancies, (but rumour has it that no DOM wants them because they fear they won't be able to cope with a delivery.)
That's why they have to cover delivery - because we don't have enough bodies on the ground.

But if an office has 5 vacancies and those 5 vacancies are filled with bag carriers, then that isn't going to affect the available indoor hours. (In fact filling the vacancies will just decrease the earning potential of people who like to work their day off) So if managers still need to do OPG work it means that somewhere their figures are wrong - either because the mail is not being properly counted ( and here we go back to why the Mail Centre figures are so wildly inaccurate) or (as in Glasgow's case) because we are still using the Capacity Plan which is a crock of shite that doesn't accurately reflect all the indoor work.

And if managers are doing OPG work they are giving the unit a false EP - and then what happens if the manager goes sick and is replaced by a manger who rightly doesn't want to do OPG work.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's not up to the DOM regarding taking on FT staff, that decision is made by regional director level.

This scenario of delivery office managers doing opg grade work is a national problem . The C.W.U. H.Q. should realise this and do somthing about it. We are currently at a 2nd stage disaggrement in my office regarding this issue.
