ROYAL MAIL MANAGERS TO VOTE ON STRIKES

Thousands of Royal Mail managers in Britain are to be balloted for strikes in a row over job cuts in the first move of its kind since 1979, the year of the Winter of Discontent, it was announced yesterday.

Unite said 8,500 managers based in head offices at the Royal Mail, Parcelforce and the Post Office will vote on whether to launch a campaign of industrial action.

The union said the ballot was being held in protest at plans to cut 1,500 managers' jobs at the postal group.

Dingo, if the CMU/Unite did go on strike, would normal postal staff (ie anyone who is not a manager) still go in as normal or would offices get closed under health and safety? Would we have to cross their picket lines (it would be strange if they stage warned people who didn't come in through not wanting to cross their picket lines)?

EDIT: Is it just higher up managers involved or is it all managers?

They won't strike, no backbone. All the work would be completed with out them there which will prove we don't need 99% of them.

Don't assume that this relates to Managers in DO's or MC's, this relates to RM wanting to takes 2,000 Managers out of "Central functions" such as HR, payroll, Commercial, purchasing etc. Yes the mail would still get delivered by you guys, but what if your pay and docket don't get processed for it?

yes we go in as normal they crossed our lines even though the cma are in the tuc so lets go in and show them how its done and how it should be done

No way will managers go on strike as they are a gutless bunch. They would much rather we went on strike for them. Then they would cross our picket lines to pick their wages up.

The ballot is for support managers and will in the main be at places which are not effecting delivery offices or mail centres.

However I can remember early 80s when the CMA did go on stike for one day , it did not get the support they wanted , however a lot of us did not cross picket lines. I have had my stand up rows with unite over their managers doing our work when we were out on stike including picketing unite headquarters and having meetings with simpson and paul Rourter . However I would not cross their picket lines as i would not cross any picket lines. Its something to do with respect and principles.
