Rural Darwen residents face 14-mile trip to collect parcels

DARWEN'S MP has demanded answers as residents in rural areas are now forced to collect parcels from Bolton.

Jake Berry has written to the Royal Mail after learning that postmen working in the Turton area have been instructed to return undelivered packages to the post office in Bolton rather than to the one in Edgworth.

Mr Berry said it was “outrageous” that residents were now expected to make a 14-mile round-trip.

He said: “They will now have to use a sizeable part of their day collecting parcels which were undelivered.

“It is a huge inconvenience, especially to the elderly, those with young children and those who work long hours, who will now have to plan ahead before collecting their parcels from Bolton.

“I am therefore urging Royal Mail to reconsider their decision and bring back this vital service to Edgworth and I will continue to push for this until I am heard.”

Mr Berry has called on the organisation to reinstate the collection service at Edgworth.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “Customers who are out when Royal Mail attempts to deliver an item of mail which is too large for the letterbox or which requires a signature can choose from a number of options to retrieve their item.

“The options, which are listed on the card left by the postman, include having the item re-delivered to their own or another local address at a mutually convenient time, collecting it from their local Post Office for a small charge, or collecting it from the delivery office.

“The first two options can be arranged by telephone or via the Royal Mail website.”

Agreed,this is the future,so people had better just get used to it. Do you honestly believe a privatised Royal Mail will care about people in rural area's,.....dream on sunshine.

Round here, if you're out two days in a row for a courier delivery it's just short of a 60 mile round trip to collect it from their depots

I don't think it is all that unreasonable to expect someone who lives in a rural area to have to make a 7 mile trip to the callers office. Some of our customers have to almost do that distance across town, nevermind those from rural areas.

they moved our DO,so now folks who live opposite the old DO travel about 5 miles to our new DO

And that's exactly my point! It's completely unreasonable to create these situations! It's also a display of the worst incompetence I've come across in a while!

the elderly - most likely at home all day.
those with young children - most likely at home all day.
those who work long hours - should have thought to have parcels sent to their work address.
