Ely residents block post office alcohol licence

A POST Office in Ely, Cardiff, has been refused an alcohol licence by councillors.

The store on Grand Avenue applied to sell alcoholic drinks from 9am to 9pm during weekdays and Saturdays.

Local resident Cheryl Gemmett, who lives opposite, raised concerns about the possibility of drink-related anti-social behaviour if the licence had been granted.

She added: “The government is telling us to get fit and not drink, and yet we have no fresh fruit and veg shops on Grand Avenue and lots of takeaways and off licences. It makes no sense.”

Saad Taha, who lodged the application for the licence, said he could have boosted employment in the area by taking on extra members of staff if it had been successful.

He said: “I understand the concerns residents have about people hanging around outside the store, but that is not our problem.

“That is for the police and the local community to deal with.”

Cardiff Council’s licensing sub committee decided to reject the application on the grounds of public safety.

Having said that, it could make the difference between the Post Office staying open or closing, if it closes then those same residents will have shot themselves in the foot.

after looking at the area through Google street view, I don't see what the fuss is about, there are other shops that looks like they could also sell alcohol as well.

It makes no sense.” If nearby residents wanted fresh fruit and veg then the local shopkeepers would stock such produce, but Ely is such a depressing district of Cardiff that all anyone wants to do there is get pissed once they've cashed their Giro at the local Post Office.
