Flat Sorting Machines - Manning Levels

could anyone that works on the flat sorting machine around the country,please post to my comment! we seem to work regularly on limited staff,to free some of us up for manual sorting and anything else going.we put manual letters through the machine and then have to work like mad to take them out again on 1 of our lanes,which is not part of our job. and we walksort at our mail centre and have to sort on the conveyer at the end to 6 selections.again,not part of our job that we signed ourselves up for.i would be pleased to hear from any other mail centre regarding any of the above comments i have made.lastly,1 member of our top 10 people seems to do what the hell he likes alnight and is rarely challenged.he makes out he is a hard worker and isn't at all! does that follow in other mail centres? if so,why have managers that can't pick on the right people.

Speak to your Regional Health and Safety Manager regarding this.As far as i can remember from the agreement regarding the FSM,you can have either 10 or 5 staff manning the FSM.As i have never worked on one ,i don't know how you run it with 5 but i do know that 7 is not in the agreement.The problem as far as i can see is that the Reps do not seem to know that there are even agreements regarding the FSM.

hi, my mate has said it has all been signed up for 4 weeks to try it out and he said this bloke is takeing all the data. he hopes to go back to 10 after 4 weeks;;;; watch this space.

Sorry to but in ,but seems like you are the folks who know. Just how many FSM's does RM own and what % of flat traffic do they process ?
I only ask because I have yet to see a single tray of Wsorted flats in any of the DO's I've worked in!

Ok Solystic who make the TOPS 2000 say 10 and say on their website the job is physical . The staffing is

2 loaders
4 feeders
4 lanes

When the level of work drops off we during our shift will close one input line and 3 people are freed up to sort the manual work and machine rejects. If manual is heavy it is not unknown to be asked to cover 2 lanes so at time an FSM can be down to 5 people.

I only ask because I have yet to see a single tray of Wsorted flats in any of the DO's I've worked in!

Been a fortnight now and no answers. No pressure Been asking the same question of area management for four years ,so I'm acclimatised . Do you believe in fairies?

The reference about some union reps and RM managers is oh so true.

In the mail centre I work in the number of people on the FSM is now down to 7 and is likely to stay that way for the foreseeable future. Like income tax, once imposed, never recinded.

Yet again, we see another crude example of the obnoxious management at full steam. They play on targets, performance ratios ,for the purpose of triggering the only thing they care about, BONUSES, and rather large ones if they hit the sick-minded jackpots they set. I say this to all Mail Centre Managers, Shift Managers, Line Managers and those second-rate non entities who get themselves on the acting list because they are good at licking shoes; you are all a disgrace to the Royal Mail and should bow your heads in shame. Of course, silly me, you cannot do that, because, you do not have any shame and no conscience. All you do is stick your heads in the trough and fill your pockets with the most unjustified amounts of money imaginable. Adam Crozier has left us with an almighty parting shot which i fear will destroy the Royal Mail once and for all.

Finally, I cannot leave out of this unsavoury stew our learned friends who carry the title of Area Directors, Financial Control Managers and that rubbish who front the pathetic gimmick called World Class. These individuals have never had it so good when earning money for doing nothing. The basic wage is excellent and the bonuses even better. Rotting in hell is too generous for this shower. Meanwhile TNT, UK Mail, Citipost etc, sleep easily in their beds, safe in the knowledge that at the Royal Mail we have a management structure which is rendering us virtually uncompetitive, whilst, flogging the staff with targets, performance ratios and the like, which in more cases than not are totally unrealistic.

I have been told the union have agreed to reduce the staff on all the FSM sorting machines.You will hear more about it in the next few weeks. Not sure about the number but my guess would be 7.

We get walksorted flats in our DO Tues-Sat. (Missorts aplenty)
It is possibly about 15-20% of the total BUT they are going to increase that amount and bring them in at 6am not 8am (or so they told me about 6 months ago )

It is possibly about 15-20% of the total BUT they are going to increase that amount and bring them in at 6am not 8am (or so they told me about 6 months ago )

Same here Clash and to my untrained eye they appear to be RMs biggest white elephant to date.
Around 30% missorts.
Around 40% letters.
Mostly half empty trays or in some cases as little as 2 flats in a tray.
I don't work in a Mailcentre so i don't know if this is the operators fault or the machine but the final output is piss poor.
