A CITY sorting office will frank Liverpool’s mail for the last time this weekend

Around 160 staff went to work in Royal Mail’s Copperas Hill sorting office at 10pm yesterday in what was one of the final shifts at the site, has been operating since 1977. The 600 employees will move to a new centre in Warrington, although some have chosen redundancy.

The move was supposed to happen on October 11, but was delayed for operational reasons.

Mark Walsh, Communication Workers Union branch secretary at Copperas Hill, said after years of uncertainty over the office’s future, staff were pleased things had been resolved, but disappointed to be leaving.

He said: “It’s not just sad for us to be leaving the city, but we think it’s a sad day for our city to lose another large employer who over the years has given employment to thousands of men and women from across Merseyside and the surrounding areas.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We have been transferring processing work from Liverpool Mail Centre on Copperas Hill to our new mail centre in Warrington on a phased basis over the past few months and the final work is due to move on Sunday.”
