Masked robbers steal £3,000 in raid on temporary village Post Office

MASKED robbers stole thousands of pounds in a raid on a temporary Post Office.

About £3,000 in cash and several hundred Euros were taken from the office, set up in Langworth Memorial Hall in Langworth, near Lincoln.

Two men wearing balaclavas targeted the village at about 3.45pm on Monday.

They went into the hall in Station Road and threatened a woman who was manning the Post Office.


Jacki Myers , chairman of the memorial hall, said: "The post office was running as usual and I had been there and left by about 2pm.

"From what I understand, the men in balaclavas came into the hall, demanded the money and told the lady there to get on the floor.

"The lady was very shaken up.

"We are all very shocked here in the village.

"We are not in the middle of nowhere – we are on the main road going through the village. People go in and out of the hall all afternoon when the Post Office is here.

"I just hope this issue isn't going to see us lose us the facility."

It is thought the offenders left the scene over fields to the back of the hall and got into a maroon saloon car, which was parked near a public footpath in Barlings Lane.

Police say the car may have been parked at that spot for up to half-an-hour before and the offenders may have been in the village earlier in the day. This vehicle drove off towards the A158.

The main Post Office in Langworth was closed in July 2008 despite a fierce campaign from people who wanted to see it stay open. Terry O'Halloran, who led the fight, said one of the group's concerns had been about security.

He said: "We warned about this.

"Part of the reason we did not want the Post Office closed was because we did not want to have to use the memorial hall because of the exposure it has to this sort of thing.

"The proper Post Office was right in the back of a shop behind bullet-proof glass and it had safe locks."

Royal Mail told the Echo the member of staff affected was very distressed by the incident.

A spokesman said it was not policy to talk about money.
