THE closure of a Liverpool postal sorting office forcing staff to move jobs to Warrington was delayed.
Royal Mail announced plans to close the city’s Copperas Hill centre in 2008 and the final shift was due this weekend.
But for “operational reasons”, according to a Royal Mail spokesman, this move was put back to October 18.
Mark Walsh, Communication Workers Union branch secretary at Copperas Hill, said staff were glad to have another week in the city, but said the delay just held up “a bad day in Liverpool’s history”.
The sorting office employed 600 people in the city and although most have chosen to move to Warrington, some have chosen redundancy.
The closure means Liverpool is the only major city in the UK without a sorting office. It will be decommissioned over several months.
