PO worker who transferred £1,500 into his bank account will pay back stolen cash

A VILLAGE post office worker stole £1,500 and then tried to cover up his crime, Lincoln Crown Court has been told.

Robert Wainwright, who worked as a clerk at the post office at Sutterton, near Boston, was trusted to open up when postmistress Hilary Footitt was away.

Simon Rowe, prosecuting, said Wainwright was given instructions to log into the post office computer system as soon as he arrived and transfer £2,000 into the cash machine account.

He completed that transaction, but later went into the system again and transferred £1,500 into his own bank account.

Wainwright, 26, of Station Road, Sutterton, denied theft on October 5, last year but changed his plea to guilty shortly after the start of his trial.

He was given an eight-month jail sentence suspended for two years and 120 hours of unpaid work.

Wainwright was also ordered to pay £1,800 to Mrs Footitt and £100 each to Margaret Holland and Alison Maycroft, the two innocent employees who came under suspicion of theft.

In addition, Wainwright had £1,500 confiscated as the proceeds of crime and was ordered to pay £3,000 prosecution costs.
