A man was viciously attacked on the way home from his 50th birthday party in Birmingham.
Royal Mail driver Stephen Woolley was so badly injured that doctors could see his skull when he arrived at the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He was knocked unconscious in Barnes Hill, Weoley Castle, by a young man who had taunted him about his clothes.
Mr Woolley smashed his head on the pavement as he crashed to the ground.
The thug, accompanied by a young girl, struck as Mr Woolley was walking back from his birthday bash at Weoley Castle Working Men’s Club with his girlfriend Annette Fletcher at 1.45am last Sunday.
“He said something about the suit I was wearing and I thought that was the end of it,” said Mr Woolley.
“I carried on walking and went to cross the road when he punched the side of my face,” he added.
“The next thing I remember was waking up in hospital.”
The attacker and the girl fled as two men and two women ran to his aid.
“Young people get a lot of stick in this day and age,” said Mr Woolley.
“So fair play to them for helping me out – I’m really proud of them.
“A lot of people wouldn’t want to get involved in something like that.”
Mr Woolley needed stitches for his head wound but does not yet know whether he has suffered any lasting damage.
Ms Fletcher, who is herself a nurse at the QE, said one of the men who stopped to help took off his shirt to help stem the blood from Mr Woolley’s head.
The two women placed their handbags under his head as support.
“They ran straight over to help,” said Annette, aged 40.
“They were really good and stayed with us. I can’t thank them enough.”
The attacker was white, about 5ft 10ins, of medium build and with dark hair.
West Midlands Police confirmed officers were investigating the attack.
