A MASSIVE new mail sorting centre could be built in Hemel Hempstead, bringing with it the prospect of hundreds of jobs.

Under proposals drawn up by Royal Mail, sorting operations in Watford, Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead would be centralised in a state-of-the-art operation in Maxted Road.

Royal Mail says it is too early to talk about how many people will work at the depot – which will boast the latest sorting technology – but around 1,000 people currently work at the three centres.

Business chiefs have welcomed the plans as a boost to the town’s economy.

The proposals also include the closure of delivery offices in Berkhamsted and Kings Langley but mail bosses say customers will still be able to collect parcels without having to travel to Hemel Hempstead.

Royal Mail spokesman Sally Hopkins said: “We want to build a new mail centre in Hemel Hempstead.

“The mail processing in Watford, Stevenage and the existing site, all that will go into a purpose-built brand new building.

“We need more space to put in new machines which enable us to sort mail more efficiently.

“The new mail centre will be equipped with state-of-the-art automation, which can process mail more efficiently and at significantly higher speeds.

“We don’t envisage this having any impact on the delivery service we offer to customers.

“Customers shouldn’t notice any difference.”

Currently 4,500 people work in sorting and delivery operations across all the areas affected by the proposals.

It is expected that 300 jobs will go in the move, though Royal Mail management believes that this can be achieved without compulsory redundancies.

A total of 100 people work in the delivery offices in Berkhamsted and Kings Langley.

Rachel Boxall, area director for Herts Chamber of Commerce, said: “I think it’s very positive.

“It’s good news for the town if people are coming in and spending money.

“It’s good for Maylands and the plans to improve the Maylands area.

“It shows there’s confidence with people coming in. It gives it extra credibility.”

The Communication Workers’ Union said talks were still continuing about the proposed closures.

Eastern regional secretary Paul Moffat said: “We don’t know what’s going to be left.”

The current Park Lane centre will close under the plans with the prospect of being sold off.

A final decision on the plans is expected in November.
