When I did it, I came in on the Sat, depends how much you enjoy the job I guess, I had no problem coming in, as for jury service, bored out of my mind, sitting around waiting for legal teams and judges to argue points of law while we sat around doing sweet fa. Enjoyed the experience once in court, but can you imagine how much money is wasted across the country at these places, I think it would top up our pension fund in 6 months.

Nope, after 5 days sitting around on my ar5e it was nice to do 5 hours excercise and keep in touch with all the lads. Getting fully paid for doing very little from Mon to Fri, i never even considered not going in on the Sat.

Everybody needs to get away from this idea that Jury Service and work and work hours are somehow connected.
The only connection between work and jury service is that if you have to miss work because of jury service they will compensate you financially....if you don't have to miss work because it's your day off...they won't.
If you don't have to miss work....because it's saturday and you don't have jury service on a saturday...you are expected to attend work.

Most managers would,in the past take the easy route and put you down on the claim form as Mon-Fri with your day off being saturday.
That obviously hasn't happened in this case but refusing to come in on the saturday is not sensible advice because technically,if not morally your manager has the right to expect your attendance on the saturday.

FFS how hard is it to get out of jury service!!!!!!!!!!
Just go in and say 'I don't belive in the electric chair, I prefer electric bleachers where they can all be executed at once' or my personal favourite 'If they appear in court they they are guilty and I will be voting that way'

Judge won't even want to hear anymore and they no jury service and more happy days at work

I think (as you know and agree lol) that it's wrong that we would have to do a 5 day stint at the courts then come in on the Sat to work,so in effect we are doing a 6 day stint.

It would be very easy as you know to change things,yes there are wank managers out there,but as in mine who didn't,you can bet your life they wont be in on a Sat if it was them!

just doing jury service , and a couple of the jurors had trouble with their employers who kept on insisting they had to work sat/or sunday as it was their contracted day to work even though they were doing 5 days mon to fri on jury service, the courts wrote to the companies involved and said it would be unfair and improper for them to work either sat/sun. it would impact on their duty as an effective juror, they also went as far as to say that if they continued to harass the jurors the judge would invite the companies to court and i think deal with them.the long and short of it being yes you as an individual are doing your civic duty but companies have a duty too. a jury is selected after there are no reasonable reasons they could not serve, i.e booked and paid for holidays, child care , impact on company [small buisnesses] .any commitment made the judge feels is important enough to excuse you [self employed etc hope this helps.

I've never done JS so haven't really thought about this but would jusy naturally assume that you would not have to work on the Saturday, but I think you are right that the DOM could insist that you did if he was so mind to. However, I would suggest that any DOM taking this somewhat piss poor approach would not be doing himself any favours in the long run with regard to future co-operation from the member of staff concerned. I'd certainly take a very dim view of it.

Maybe the op Dom still thinks it's a 6 day week. When I done jury back in 97 ish I was told I had to come in on the Saturday. Tell the dim to bog off.

as i have said earlier you work a 5 day week. in court that is mon to fri, if anyone gives you grief then notify the judge who will first write to your dom .if he persists then they will be invited to court and face the consequences.that is what happened on our jury with 2 other jurors, the companies backed off. they also have legislation in place to deal with any nastiness that is applied after your jury service is finished

Ok then.. so according to the posts here then I have done my five days "work", as such, as I've been on jury service all of this week, from Monday to Friday and as today, Friday, was my day off does it then follow, from what has been said here, that I don't need to turn in to work on Saturday morning then?
I have no problem at all with going to work on Monday as we, the serving jury members, have not yet been released from jury service by the courts, as the case we were on ended today and the judge has instructed us to return to court on Tuesday next week. Therefore it follows that I am still required by the courts to carry out my jury service, even if the courts are not in session on Saturday.
I've no idea as to why we are not in court next Monday, but as I said I have no problem with going to work on Monday and returning to do jury service on Tuesday of next week.
The reason I'm asking this is because today, as I've said previously if I wasn't on jury service, Friday would have been my day off and I'd be back in work on Saturday anyway.
I've only just returned home so any help on this would be appreciated as it's now nearly 6pm on Friday evening.

my jury service ended up lasting nearly 4 months , i did not work any saturdays at all as it was agreed that your 5 days were mon to fri., there were days when we were not required ., on those days i went into work and done what ever duty there was to cover mon to fri because sat and sun were days off some you were for warned of others thru illness of others you werent , there were days when we got to court and were sent home after 15 mins because of some point of law , you were paid by the courts as attending and too late for a delivery duty , in the first two weeks it was a minimal amount which just covered your loss after two weeks it went up to another level which easily covered loss of earnings , your days off in your jury service are sat and sun, so when not at court during mon to fri you attend work .to expect to have ur normal rota day off and the sat and sun is havin your cake and eatin it , if you had today off then you should go in tomorrow if you werent at court today at all, and it follows that mon you should attend work...............................hope this helps

We were in court today, as I said we've been in all week- Monday to Friday. Hence my question about going in to work tomorrow. We've been in and out of the court on points on law everyday this week and waited in the outer room to be called back in to continue after waiting for about 10-30mins some times, but we were in court everyday this week. Just asking to see if today (although my offical day off on my delivery) would I need to go in to work on Sat. As it would appear that being in court from Monday to Friday seems to count as a working week then it follows that, as you say, my day off is tomorrow (Saturday) so going on what you say I'll take tomorrow as my day off then and go in on Monday next week.

yes sorry misread , before the case i attended got going i went and talked with union rep proir to dom to clear this point and as you may have read there were jurors that had problems with their companies insisting they worked other sunday or saturday after doing 5 days in court , the companies were sent letters from courts and judge and backed off///////////////////////////
