IT’S the end of an era as a Worcester post office is up for sale and in need of new owners.

Jeremy Richardson is selling Dines Green Post Office and Newsagent so he can retire and spend more time with family.

The 70-year-old, who has manned the desk since he was 25, took over the business from his father 40 years ago.

He is now hoping that the premises in Gresham Road – on the market for £59,995 – will be bought by someone else with local ties. “I’ve enjoyed the job,” said Mr Rich-ardson.

“I get on well with the people. I’ve seen little ones grow up to have their own little ones.

“It would be nice to see it taken over by someone who is local, someone who is already known.”

Mr Richardson, a former captain of Worcester Rugby Club, has watched Dines Green grow and change over the decades. He said: “The community centre was built and shops have come and gone with the times, but we’ve got a community that exists very well.

“It’s a friendly place to be. I’d like say thank you to all our customers.”

Mr Richardson hit the headlines last year after he fought off an armed teenager who tried to steal money from his store.

The post office sale is being handled by Preferred Commercial. While the postmaster salary is £24,000 a year and the associated newsagent has a turnover of about £255,000 a year, the sellers say there is room for expansion, such as extending the retail area or adding a Lotto facility.

A spokesman for the Post Office has confirmed that the business will remain in Dines Green.

Sounded really nice, just like an estate agents spiel until then. Bet he's cursing :Very Happy
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.
