You're right. Because it does not suit those who keep harping on about preserving full time jobs - that, in the long term, is not going to happen. There is no way to force an employer to keep full time work that doesn't suit the work plan or even exist. The trick is preserving jobs at all and having a plan to scale down the workforce in a manner suited to that work flow. There has to be some inkling at higher level of the CWU that maintaining the work force as it is or even 75/25% FT/PT is not a realistic aim - hence the buy down of hours scheme - if you had wanted to make a stand on FT you would have resisted that move by RM or at least had a total buy down figure in mind - that doesn't appear to be the case. So you are left with a 5 day shorter working week which condenses the workload and does preserve jobs and at the same time promotes full time work.

So because 70% of 300 people vote in an online poll, some of them won't be CWU members, you don't even know if all of them work for RM, the CWU should begin a costly campaign to have the USO changed?
Meanwhile back in the real world.......... :cuppa
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I agree CCR this poll is meaningless but while we're in the real world even if 100% of cwu members wanted rid of Saturdays the CWU would not support it or campaign for it.
I don't want it but that is nothing more than a coincidence with union policy....certainly nothing to do with representing members wishes.

The 5 day service is laid down in EU Law/Postal services directives I thought and European postal operators/legislators have to maintain that as a minium, thus making less than 5 day service unlikley.

I want Saturday off.

So it allow me freedom to go

football matches without hassle.
salsa dancing at Friday night and stay out there
salsa weekend breaks
more recovery time
less work ie 40 instead of 48

if Royal Mail get the balanced workload right and don't exceed 4 hours every day on delivery.

So if there is lot of walks which is too big, it might be cut into smaller and then save jobs by getting balance right. But that is about likely as Birmingham City winning Champions League :nana

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The Con-Dems will wipe their arses on the USO as they are currently suggesting. Mon-Fri deliveries is not an enabler to abandoning the current USO it is just part of the larger buisness decision to make the service more 'commercially viable'. The USO isn't sacred, it's a promise to customers made in the day before mail market liberalisation which is now not realistic. The market has been rigged to make this the case as we know by Capitalist scum in Brussels.
You're right about one thing: It's going too far, thinking that the USO is sacred. But it IS a very important commitment to the Public. To whom we provide a service. :hmmmm Yes, we're now a business, :Sick but that doesn't alter the fact that we still provide a service. And when exactly, do you think that people will be able to recieve their parcels, or anything they need to sign for? :hmmmm
You think they'll be happy to go and collect it themselves, every time? :hmmmm
And will the room of doom be open at the weekends, if there aren't any deliveries?
If so, how will it be staffed?
It'll hardly be fair, for a handfull of people to work saturdays, when the rest don't have to. :no no :hmmmm

And what if it isn't open on Saturdays. When will people be able to collect their Mail? :hmmmm
Things like this need to be thought out long before the removal of Saturday deliveries, is even CONSIDERED. And what about the inconvenience? :hmmmm
I (and many others) joined RM to help provide an important public service. So things like this matter to me.

Well not delivering mail on Saturday is not the same as saying no one will work on Saturday. There is of course a number of issues to be considered, parcels, SG Specials, collections and not least of all the Callers office which is very important to customers. It would be difficult to estimate how many staff would be needed to man an operation to cover these various disciplines and how exactly it would be covered, SA, Overtime, Part Time, or Hybrid Duties but it would mean work and therefore jobs.

I'm a No on this one as well. If we lose the Saturday delivery (or Monday, Tuesday, whatever) we will have one less day to deliver the mail. Now unless you believe that the mail volumes are falling so fast that we need to lose a day, we will have if we're lucky an extra 20% mail (including packets) every day. That is if RM split the lost day evenly throughout the week. As most duty's are already overstretched, and remember there will be no additional time, how will we cope with this increased workload? And that is if RM split it equally, you'll be just as likely to have shorter Mondays and Tuesdays and very late Wednesday to Fridays to compensate. Mail arrivals will also be later as the MC's will have to shift this extra 20% per day as well, and with RM's plans to close most of them and move into these super MCs which will be further away, you could well be working Monday to Friday, but you won't be finishing till 7.00pm and that would be a great start to the weekend.

Difficult one, but as has been said before, it`s too many jobs to lose.

More mail Mon-Fri, until those 10% and 4% drops in mail start to show.

I`d love to be able to stay in bed every Saturday morning, but this would def be the beginning of the end.

No, Jobs will be lost, more part-time staff, conditions poorer, pension will be less....... the list could go for ages.

The poll basically asks

are you full time?

no Saturday, no reserves or covers. my, we are a selfish, shortsighted bunch!

Nice theory but as with everything when you try to put people into boxes, facts get in the way.

I voted No, and I am FT.

What possible relevance does your contracted hours have on whether you want rid of Saturdays?
As far as i'm aware both full-time and part-time work Saturdays..our reserves and RDCs are a mix of full and part-time....i'm full-time and i voted NO....and i'm sure plenty of part-timers have voted YES....i don't get your logic at all. :confused
