Seven postmen attacked by dogs

AN ANNAN postman needed medical treatment after being set upon by a vicious dog.

And pet owners across the region are being warned to keep their animals on a tight lead after a total of seven posties fell prey to dog attacks in the last six months.

Royal Mail this week revealed the separate attacks all took place in Annan and Castle Douglas.

One of the Annan attacks was so severe that the postman had to take a day off work after the incident where he was bitten three times.

The local worker needed a tetanus jab and a course of antibiotics.

However, Julie Morrison, head of external relations at Royal Mail said the other six attacks were not classed as serious, but were reported to bosses.

Four of the incidents took place in Annan while the other three happened in Castle Douglas.

Royal Mail customers are being urged to keep their pets under control during doorstep deliveries.

Julie Morrison added: “Royal Mail takes the safety of its employees very seriously indeed, particularly those staff who deliver the mail. Unfortunately, dog attacks are a hazard faced by our postmen and women every working day. Our main aim is to prevent attacks and to train staff in techniques to help keep them safe. We also need the co-operation of our customers and we encourage the public to take responsibility for keeping their pets under control.”

Recently, we had one postie bitten in the face, head, neck, ear and another chased who badly twisted his ankle.
Two injuries in one day. Two posties out of action, through no fault of their own.

Its only going to get worse. We are out delivering later, people won't keep their dogs shut in all day. They've no idea what time the post is turning up now. At least when we used to get out early everyone was asleep, including the dog.

How many of these attacks have come on walks being done on absorption where the postman/woman is not familiar with the delivery? Have the figures risen since the introduction of this now seemingly permanent use of absorption to cut costs?

WTF. Julie Morrison , head of external relations ,does exactly what! said the OTHER SIX ATTACKS were not classed as serious...in whose estimation exactly, her or the dom. I can assure you that any postie being chased , bitten or being threatened by the prospect of being attacked by any dog is Serious...Dont imagine there are many loose dogs roaming around in her office

i had reported 3 in a year

and those aren't including where a dog has tried to shag a postie's leg causing the postie to trip over it and into a roughcast wall, little bloody ankle biters! I'm lucky enough never to have been bitten by one tho.

It more embarrassing when the dog jumps up on you and puts it paw straight into your balls worse still when the only asks why you're doubled up in their driveway

Q.1. Were any of these seven attacks on postman duly reported to the Police by the individuals concerned and with the assistance of their managers?

Q.2. Were any of these seven attacks duly reported through the new WRAP reporting system which was officially launched on Fri 21st May 2010?

I have always been told this phrase and when I joined the job 22 years ago I found out what it meant.
"The earlier in the day, there more responsible the dog owner!"
It is more than coincidence that since we went onto the single later delivery that dog attacks have gone up.
After mid day, is when all the idiots get out of bed, you know those ones who wear the black trackies with a staff off the lead!
Wait until we are delivering in the dark again in the EVENING! It's only a question of when a postie is savaged to death by a dog while on duty!
