Bosses out to kill mail centres

Plans by Royal Mail to close dozens of mail centres with the loss of thousands of jobs gathered pace this week.

The London division of the CWU union confirmed that bosses in the capital are determined to shut two mail centres and possibly the giant Rathbone Place central London delivery office with the loss of around 3,000 jobs.

Royal Mail’s strategy was exclusively revealed in Socialist Worker last month.

Any mail centre closure is unacceptable. And few in the CWU union believe that “surplus staff” can be absorbed by voluntary redundancies, raising the prospect of conflict.

Even those who keep their jobs will be angry at being forced to travel from one side of the city to the other, at all hours of the day and night, so that Royal Mail can make a profit.

However, the potential to strike against mail centre closures is being hampered by the national agreement signed by bosses and the union earlier this year.

The deal says the union can only oppose the company plans if it comes up with its own cost-saving measures.

This has not stopped union activists in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, from launching a fight to save the mail centre in their town.

Activists are planning a demonstration on Saturday 30 October.

“We want postal workers from around the country, and our trade union supporters from the area, to join us,” says CWU rep Paul Turnbull.

“It is vital that we show Royal Mail, and the Tories that want to privatise us, that we are not going to give up without a fight.”
