So, if you're driving a Vauxhall, don't press the button when applying the handbrake... as it says in handbook... which of course all our drivers are given to read aren't they?!
That's what Vauxhall are saying about their handbrakes so you might have a point to raise there. If you'd been given the handbrake, or advised that Vauxhalls have a different handbrake usage to how we were all taught to drive, then you'd have applied it properly in line with manufacturer's guidelines.
However, that does then raise the point that you should've put it in gear and pointed the front wheels towards toward the kerb as that's what I was taught when I learnt to drive, as you shouldn't rely on the handbrake.
It does seem, however, a common fault from my experience in other offices. I've seen a number of vans off the road (mainly rurals) that have handbrake problems. One had the problem right from new, it wasn't something that developed over time.

Nearly all the Vauxhalls have dodgy handbrakes ,much like the Sherpa's did.

Just add my penny worth It is a commom problem with Royal mail vans it something to to with the rear brake adjuster. you will notice that the handbrake will go up a lot more before it bites,if this happen before filling a PMT1 jack the rear up with van in gear HANDBRAKE ON and see which wheel turns this way you can put on the PMT1 FORM WHICH SIDE.Plus on the combos the gear linkage falls off leaving you no gears the workshop should know both problems both are easy fixes.
