A Wellingborough business is facing the prospect of a substantial fine after almost half its staff were exposed as illegal workers.
Eight UK Border Agency officers, supported by an officer from Northamptonshire Police, raided Wellingborough Mail Centre in Fleming Close at 2.30pm yesterday.
The enforcement operation was part of planned nationwide action by the UK Border Agency to tackle illegal working, sham marriages, bogus colleges and organised immigration crime.
Checks on the 16 people working at the mail distribution depot revealed that six Indian nationals were immigration offenders.
Four men – aged 44, 37, 36 and 27 – were failed asylum seekers. Two men – aged 40 and 35 – were working in breach of valid student visas.
The UK Border Agency is now working to remove all six from the country.
The Wellingborough Mail Centre now faces a potential fine of up to £60,000 - £10,000 per illegal worker – unless it can prove that the correct pre-employment checks were carried out.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
