Some people can't afford to not work overtime or their days off so asking them to do it day in, day out, isn't feasible.

No-one should need to work overtime to pay for the essentials...luxuries can be sacrificed.
If you need overtime to live you are walking a tightrope wearing a blindfold in a thunderstorm and you will fall off.
I don't have a car, don't smoke, don't take foreign holidays and very rarely work overtime. :nana Simple. :nana

so what happens if the OT dries up?
What happens if you lose your job??? Works both ways really. I work my rest day and will continue to do so until something changes.

RM wont give out any more full time contracts until office revisions have been agreed and finalised. This wont happen until at least January when the d2d single envelop plan might start, apparently its only worth doing if there are 6 or more d2d items. Banging on about {Doing the job properly} again, Or DOM is having to reintroduce early morning sorting and stop lapsing as the majority of our office is now [doing the job properly] small changes, but working your hours and having a proper break etc etc can make a difference, and you cant get the sack for it

Some people would still do O/T even if they knew it would cost someone their job, there are too many who think of themselves only.

they are just doing a working week
Funnily enough, custard, that's how RM view it as well, cos no matter how many hours in your contract, OT rates don't get paid till the 41st hour :cry
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

Sad fact is too many people (full-timers) in my office need/do overtime just to survive.

Either that or they are just f______ greedy.

Seriously, its like a drug to some people,15-20+ hrs every week without fail.

I even overheard one fella (f/t) talking to his mate recently about the new proposed shift patterns (for Park & Loop) that we are voting on.

Said he wanted to stay as he was (one Saturday off in six) as if he did any other hours he thought he might "lose all his overtime".

Seriously, what planet are these people on?
“Shorts,in this weather?!”

“If they’re bills I don’t want ‘em!”

“What’s she been ordering now?”

I missed the name calling...TBT was too quick for me. :chuckle
What you have to understand is the basic questions behind this and how to address them.
Why do Royal Mail prefer to give you a 25hr contract and pay you 15hrs overtime rather than give you a 40hr contract and a decent living wage?
What can we as members do to change this position?
Is your need to pay the bills in the short term actually weakening your chance of long term financial security?
I'm afraid as long as members continue to play the Royal Mail game...then they will play by Royal Mail's rules and those rules are screw the part-timers because they will always come back for more.

We don't really work for a caring employer do we?

I completely understand but RM have you over a barrel and they know it. There are people who took the job and able to cope on the minimum they earned and did the overtime for the extra spends. Then their circumstances changed and now they have to do the overtime to earn a decent wage. They give out 10 hour contracts saying "there's plenty of overtime" so people take the job. If that person said, no thanks, they'd offer it to the next person. They'd not be short of people to recruit if they went out on the streets nowadays offering people contracts due to the amount of redundancies in the past year or so. So, rather than you getting an increased contract by refusing to do overtime until your contract is made up, they're more likely to take someone on a 1 hr contract who's desperate for work. Whilst that's truly altruistic, altruism doesn't pay the bills.

Eric Cantona wrote:I think the way we have been treated by Royal Mail and the CWU we should take the company and the union on ourselves and show solidarity, instead of sitting back week after week taking the same old crap, I’m going for the 1st week in October for two weeks only.
BAN OVERTIME.
WORK TO YOUR TIME.
TAKE YOUR BREAKS.
DON’T COME IN EARLY.
DON’T WORK YOUR DAY OFF.
NO CAR ON DELIVERY.
Do the job right and give the managers a run around, if you remembered when we were on strike the back log was cleared by overtime, when the heavy snow came last year the mail built up and up because nobody could really clear it, we need to do something like this again, the company would come to a standstill if we do this, who really needs the union, there doing nothing for us, I bet a union rep won't come on and say they are doing something, we need to think of our future, and get these bullish tactics cut out.
Lets get this round to many offices as possible.
We need RM to listen to us and the managers, I think the managers are under immense pressure as well as us, we need to get it further than our DOMs .
Lets go for it Starting 4th October..

You mean just like any other week for me then ?
