Nine-year-old Josh Riley, with mum Rachael Sanders, waited for nearly nine weeks to receive the parcel containing his mobile phone.

THE mother of a boy who sold his old toys to buy a mobile phone is demanding compensation from the Royal Mail after claiming it took nearly nine weeks for the parcel to arrive.

Rachael Sanders said her nine-year-old son, Josh Riley, spent £60 buying a phone online in July but only received it yesterday, nearly nine weeks later.

Ms Sanders said she had been told by Royal Mail that a postman tried to deliver the parcel but no-one was home to sign for it so it was returned to the local sorting office. But she said she never received a note through her door saying the postman had called.

As a result, she did not collect the parcel from the local office and it was sent to a central office in Dublin to be returned to the sender.

Ms Sanders said she only tracked the parcel down after she wondered why it was taking so long and phoned the sender and then Royal Mail.

She claimed it took weeks of calls before staff at the Dublin office sent the parcel to her.

She said her son sold his collection of sticker books and used birthday money to help raise the cash.

She said: "My lad is only nine; he was going mad that his phone hadn't arrived.

"I want the appropriate amount of compensation."

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "We are always sorry when a customer is unhappy with any of our services. We have arranged for the item to be redelivered and have offered Ms Sanders a goodwill gesture."

Ms Sanders said the gesture was a book of six stamps, which she called an "insult".

And why would it go to Dublin - the RLB is Belfast isn't it?


Then again, I suppose if she can mix up one country with another it's no surprise she "didn't get" a 739 card!

just one problem Dublin is in Eire or Republic previously the Irish Free State ....NOT part of the UK

They do this ....any little thing to make a " case " for privatisation , the drip effect ; with these poxy local rags , prior to the Digital age ...this would have been tomorrow's chip paper .

Yes, this never received a card malarky is so annoying. I always put them through but still people persist they never got one. In one instance, it turned out that the panel on the inside of a door was breaking away from the main frame, and when I pushed the cards through, it was sliding down behind it!" At other times 'missing ' mail was not missing, only their dog used to nab it and hide it under the bed--took the people months to work this out! My pet hate on this one is when you go to doors, and wee tots answer beacuse Mum?dad are still in bed, no doubt a lot of the missing mail cards etc are down to kids inside the house! Rant over.

Have I missed something here...nine year old kid, mobile? If your kid wants consumer electronics, tell him "No, you're too young & you could lose it / have it stolen." and if he goes into a paddy, grow a f*ckin' spine woman - Christ on a bike, I didn't even have a watch at age nine. Anyway who's paying for the calls, I doubt his pocket money will stretch to £10 p/w PAYG, and I doubt he has the credit record for a contract ( I'd love to know what her main source of income is - partner, full time job, or Giro )

Six stamps compensation is shocking though, I would have given them three at the most!

I just love it when people claim they never got a "wish you were in card" (as one of my fellow colleages refers to them). Or my other favourite is- "you never knocked." Yeah, because I really prefer to be stuck with loads of undelivered packets and parcels and I like wasting time writing out p739's.

This was merely an attempt by a concerned postie to protect the little lad from brain tumours/cancers/little green men and all the other nasties caused by mobile phones - - - - and his uncaring, ungrateful mother complains! There's just no pleasing some people.

The same type of people my Daughter needed to be able to call/be called by. When she got her first Mobile, when she was 9. Us, or the Police, if someone gave her trouble. Or more likely, us, to find out why she was late back.

Before she got a Mobile, she had to stay within sight of Home, so we could see she was ok. She's got a bit more freedom now. It's not as safe as it was when we were kids, playing out. Even in a group.

I don't understand that.
When I was 9 I would go off after school or at weekends all over the place, no mobile phone, nothing, no problem.
So, what's the problem or need for a mobile phone now ?

my kids have had their mobiles from about that age too. It's a different world to when we were kids. We could go out and play without fear of pedophiles (I hadn't even heard of that word at 9yrs old, how many 9yr olds could tell u what it is :o). Or other kids. Or traffic. Or...

Just so many things have changed. I hate even letting my lad going to the football fields that are local as he has 4 busy roads to cross to get there. It's like a rat race, especially at rush hour.
