Staff at Jersey Post have been given 10 days to mull over a new voluntary redundancy offer as the company continue their cost-cutting drive.

Workers who don't want to take redundancy - are being offered lesser roles on reduced pay.

Union officials have met to discuss the deal, which has been put forward because not enough employees want to leave their jobs.

As union members arrived at the meeting, they may not have known what they were letting themselves in for as there was to be a new twist in the ongoing decline of Jersey Post.

It came in the form of a new voluntary redundancy offer to staff. The reason they've made it is because around half of the 90 employees they wanted to take voluntary redundancy this summer haven't come forward.

The deal on the table actually gives them a chance to stay with the company, but that's where the good news ends, as their new offer hardly seems an enticing one.

For those accepting the new voluntary redundancy deal, they would get £360 for every year they've worked at Jersey Post.

They would then be re-employed as a postal operative - a similar but lesser role to postal worker and on a hugely reduced salary meaning their current wage of around £25k would be slashed to 19k.

A union official has told Channel TV staff are angry and upset about the new offer.

There are two more developments that are likely to have angered them further.

The first is Chief Executive of Jersey Post, Ian Carr's salary, revealed this week as reportedly being £179k or seven times that of a postal worker with the company.

The second is on their website. Despite 170 jobs being axed at the company, four new positions are being advertised, which include a Head of Client Relations and a Head of Products and Services.

No one from Jersey Post has been available for interview, but there's no doubt they'll be keeping a keen eye on developments over the next 10 days to see if the 40 or so staff they need to take voluntary redundancy will accept their new offer, but we've been told staff are not currently considering industrial action.
